Episode 08: Cobra Kai - S01E07 - All Valley

[00:00:00] JC:
Welcome to Just Curious Media. This is Let’s Talk - Cobra Kai. I’m Jason Connell, documentary filmmaker turned podcaster.

[00:00:07] SR: And I’m Sal Rodriguez, comedian and toy collector.

[0:00:10.1] JC: Wow, this is episode 7, All Valley.

[0:00:13.1] SR: Great title, by the way. I like that.

[0:00:15.5] JC: It's an 8.8 rating on IMDB, so another great episode.

[0:00:20.1] SR: Speaking of all valley, I just want to mention that I'm so excited that I finally got my all valley karate championship finals, two-pack made by NECA toy makers. Johnny Lawrence, Daniel LaRusso action figures. I'm so excited and I will be doing a review on my Salvador, Los Angeles YouTube channel.

[0:00:39.4] JC: It is amazing looking. The thing with you though is you're never going to let me play with these figures.

[0:00:43.6] SR: No, no. I will open them.

[0:00:44.7] JC: You'll open this one?

[0:00:45.4] SR: Oh, yeah. Well, in order to do a thorough toy review, you have to remove them from the box, check their articulation, look at the paint, look at the sculpt, look at their clothing fabric. These are beautiful figures. I'm anxious to take them out and do a thorough review. Yes, you will have an opportunity Jason, to play with them.

[0:01:00.2] JC: Yes. Will you then order another one to leave it unopened and pristine?

[0:01:04.7] SR: If I had a bigger budget. If just curious media had a bigger budget, I would buy one to keep in package and one to release from packaging.

[0:01:12.9] JC: We’ll see what we can do. All right, we open with a montage of Daniel teaching Robby the Miyagi way at LaRusso Auto.

[0:01:21.2] SR: Yeah, they opened up with the old wax on, wax off. Well they don't say wax on, wax off, but you see that's what he's doing and that's the homage to the original Karate Kid.

[0:01:29.4] JC: Absolutely. He goes beyond that to do raise the flag, wash the windows.

[0:01:35.3] SR: Squeegee the window. Yeah, I was looking at how is this going to become a move? It was a horizontal squeegee move.

[0:01:40.3] JC: He even made the car jack a move.

[0:01:42.7] SR: Yes.

[0:01:43.4] JC: Then we ended with sweeping the floor and stapling papers?

[0:01:48.4] SR: That was a new one.

[0:01:49.7] JC: That was a stretch.

[0:01:51.2] SR: I was thinking, how are they going to apply the stapler to an actual move? In Amanda's office, Robby's stapling papers.

[0:01:57.2] JC: You do see the bond that is happening, beyond just a new worker at LaRusso Auto, you can see that Daniel has a young student, pupil, very eager in Robby.

[0:02:08.4] SR: Almost a surrogate son, if you will, right? Because we haven't seen or heard much from Anthony. Obviously, there's some father-son bond that's not there. Daniel is gravitating towards Robby. Robby obviously gravitating towards Daniel. They are becoming this surrogate father-son type of relationship.

[0:02:28.0] JC: Well, Anthony also represents a very different millennial. He's much younger than Robby and he's just glued to his iPhone. They haven't really developed his character as much as they've done Samantha, but maybe we'll see more of him in future episodes.

[0:02:43.0] SR: Then meanwhile, Robby says, “I thought you were going to teach me karate, but I'm just doing all your shitty chores.”

[0:02:48.0] JC: Exactly. Very –

[0:02:49.1] SR: Which is very similar to what Daniel –

[0:02:50.3] JC: Karate Kid-esque. Yeah. He has that moment. Amanda looks at him and says, “I think you're enjoying this a little too much.” Then Daniel says, “God, I love this part,” because he knows he gets to play the Miyagi for the first time.

[0:03:02.6] SR: If you watch Cobra Kai, there will be things in there that are homages to Karate Kid, that you may miss if you have not seen Karate Kid.

[0:03:09.6] JC: I totally agree. Then listen to our special episode on Karate Kid.

[0:03:13.7] SR: Yes, we did a podcast on the entire movie, Karate Kid. Now we are back at the dojo and Robby's having his aha moment, his Keyser Soze moment, if you will, where he realizes all these crazy little things at LaRusso Auto are paying off and he really was learning some fundamentals of karate.

[0:03:32.3] SR: Yeah, and he even exclaims, “Whoa.” When he realizes, “All this stuff I was doing actually has a purpose and a point.”

[0:03:38.7] JC: Yeah. That's a cool scene with them in the dojo and they bow to each other. We cut to the Cobra Kai dojo and Johnny’s training his pupils. He discovers everyone's a flincher. Now Sal, please describe for the audience what a flincher is.

[0:03:54.8] SR: Well, I think you have to bring up the motion picture Stand By Me, which was released in the 80s, but I think was set in the 50s.

[0:04:01.3] JC: Correct.

[0:04:02.1] SR: Or maybe early 60s. The bullies would give you two for flinching. If they make a move towards you and you flinch and you look scared, or you tense up, boom, boom they give you two for flinching, just for flinching. Flinching in and of itself is a crime. In the Cobra Kai dojo, you don't want to be flinching. He starts to then realize, “You know what? I got to take this to the next level.” These kids got to be okay receiving a punch. They got to get actually punched.

[0:04:24.9] JC: Yeah, so that's really it. Flinching is anticipation of a punch coming and you cover up. To remedy this, Johnny informs the class that everyone will be punched hard in the face before they leave.

[0:04:37.1] SR: I actually do think that is very valuable. This is goes back to a probably a Rocky moment where he says, “It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit.” So much of fighting is being able to take a punch. It's not only that you can punch someone, that you can kick somebody, you have to be able to take a punch in order to keep moving forward.

[0:04:55.2] JC: I agree. As Johnny lets this happen, he goes in the office and he starts flipping through a magazine, comes across a $450 nunchucks, which made me laugh because I have some nunchucks and they were 20 bucks. I don't know what's happened in the last 25 years that you need a $450 pair of nunchucks.

[0:05:16.0] SR: No, but I will say this is a cool bit of trivia. The original karate guy, that the original Mr. Miyagi was patterned after was the one who brought nunchucks to the US and then Bruce Lee adopted them.

[0:05:30.9] JC: That's pretty impressive.

[0:05:31.6] SR: That is totally cool, I think.

[0:05:33.7] JC: To my point, this shouldn't cost $450. Johnny Scoff said it as well. Then he comes across the next page and what do we see?

[0:05:43.5] SR: An ad for the all-valley under-18 karate tournament.

[0:05:47.7] JC: Unbelievable. What I noticed right away was it's May 19th, 2018. It's a Saturday.

[0:05:56.6] SR: Okay, so this makes sense.

[0:05:57.7] JC: They got it right. Unlike in The Karate Kid, the tournament was set on a Wednesday.

[0:06:04.5] SR: On my action figure 2-pack, there is no date, so on the figures themselves it is timeless.

[0:06:10.7] JC: They probably caught their mistake.

[0:06:11.9] SR: Maybe so.

[0:06:12.5] JC: I think it was December 19th, 1984, which is a Wednesday. Miguel comes in the office. It's funny, he mentions, “Oh, there's a lot of blood in the dojo,” but he's got a question about a girl. Johnny is stuck on the hotness factor, which seems to be a big deal to him.

[0:06:30.8] SR: Oh, yeah. Because Miguel's describing Sam. He doesn't mention her name. “Oh, she's fun, she likes karate.” Yeah, Johnny is like, “Is she hot? She hot?” Yeah, he's fixated on her being hot.

[0:06:40.3] JC: He's such a throwback. I love when he is telling Miguel, “Don't take no for an answer.” Miguel is like, “I think no means no.” Johnny says, “If things are getting physical, yeah, no means no. If you're asking her out, you're a Cobra Kai. All babes want to date a Cobra Kai.” Such a great line.

[0:06:57.4] SR: I also can appreciate a moment like this, because if you're a young man and obviously still to this day, the men, the young men, any man is expected to make the first move, to take the first step, to say the first word in dating, right? If you're a guy who doesn't have a dad, or an older brother, or some competent friends, you don't know what to do. You have to figure it out all by yourself. It can be clumsy and very awkward. It's so fantastic that at least Miguel has somebody to come to. Even though Johnny’s response is, “Is she hot? Is she hot?” He at least has experience in dating and obviously, Miguel needs someone like this in his life.

[0:07:36.0] JC: Next, we could see Robby's on lunch break and here come his punk friends. They want to pull a robbery at LaRusso Auto.

[0:07:45.2] SR: Yes. They want Robby to get the access code and give it to these guys, so they can go rip off LaRusso parts and stereos. At first, Robby's like, “Well, you can't steal a car.” They're like, “Well, we're going to steal a car. Stereos and parts.”

[0:07:57.7] JC: You can tell now that Robby's a little conflicted. He's enjoying this connection with Daniel, because much like Miguel, he's not had a father figure. Then we don't really know what's going on beneath the surface with Robby.

[0:08:11.8] SR: Yeah, because originally, his intentions were ill. He wanted to get back at his father by joining the LaRusso team. He was not really looking for a career. He was not looking –

[0:08:22.1] JC: Or a father figure.

[0:08:22.8] SR: No. He wanted to get back at his dad after he saw his dad giving a hug to Miguel. He went in there with ulterior motives, but now he's settling in. There is a shift taking place and yeah, he has to tell his friends, “No, I don't want to be involved with this,” but they start to pressure him.

[0:08:39.7] JC: We've seen this song and dance before. These three are rotten to the core, but are we to believe that Robby's churned a corner?

[0:08:46.8] SR: Well, he is not into it. We can tell.

[0:08:49.9] JC: That's true.

[0:08:51.0] SR: They pressured him and I think he reluctantly agrees to it.

[0:08:53.2] JC: Correct.

[0:08:54.0] SR: I think he just wanted to brush them off and finish his lunch and we'll see what actually happens.

[0:08:58.1] JC: Now we're back at school and Miguel awkwardly is asking Samantha out, which is cute. Again, that pep talk with Johnny probably helped. Initially, what does Samantha say?

[0:09:11.2] SR: Well, she says, “I don't know. After Kyler, I want to take a break from dating.” She lets him down easily and says, “But I'll see you in class, right?” In other words what she says was no, but we can still be friends. That's what she said.

He walks away, but then he's like, “Wait a second, don't take no for an answer. Strike first. Strike hard. No mercy.” That's what he's thinking. He walks back, but he tries a different tactic. “Well, how about if we go out, but just as friends? It's not a date.” She says, “Okay, fine.” She goes, “Pick me up.” He says, “I can't pick you up. I don't have a car. I have a bicycle.” She goes, “I'll pick you up.” She agrees to pick up Miguel and they agreed to hang out.

[0:09:48.1] JC: Well-played, Miguel. That was a good rally call there.

[0:09:52.4] SR: Very smooth.

[0:09:54.1] JC: He has a non-date with Samantha later in the evening. We are now at LaRusso Auto and Robby's taking a photo of a car's license plate as Amanda comes by and he's doing everything around the place. He's taking a photo to send into the assessment person and she's adoring his work ethic. As she walks away, what happens?

[0:10:15.3] SR: Yeah, we realized that he's using this as a false front in order to have the camera phone turned a certain way, so that he can see the access code when Amanda punches it in.

[0:10:26.8] JC: He's got the code. Now you may not have noticed this, but do you know what she types in?

[0:10:33.0] SR: You always see this stuff. No, I did not see what she typed in.

[0:10:35.1] JC: 1984. Then 840.

[0:10:39.6] SR: Wow.

[0:10:40.2] JC: I just thought that was pretty cool. If you ever want to go to Larusso Auto, there is your ticket to entry.

[0:10:46.4] SR: Well, where is it actually? Larusso Auto would be in Georgia?

[0:10:49.0] JC: Correct.

[0:10:49.6] SR: Yeah, that is one thing I must say, if I have one little heartbreak with Cobra Kai, it’s I wanted everything to be filmed in the valley like Karate Kid. No, a lot of stuff has been filmed in Georgia. Part of the whole runway production thing, they're giving all these tax incentives to TV and movie producers in Georgia, everybody's going out there.

[0:11:06.2] JC: In the heart of it, it still represents California. Specifically this episode entitled All Valley. Now we see Johnny at the Cobra Kai dojo calling All Valley tournament.

[0:11:18.2] SR: Yeah, he wants to get his dojo in the All Valley tournament.

[0:11:20.8] JC: While he's on the phone, what does Hawk reveal to Aisha and Miguel?

[0:11:26.8] SR: Hawk has this awesome, I guess it's a hawk tattoo on his back, a huge tattoo on his back.

[0:11:33.2] JC: With a Mohawk.

[0:11:34.3] SR: The bird has a Mohawk?

[0:11:35.5] JC: Yes. I didn’t noticed it.

[0:11:36.6] JC: With blue hair, just like hawk.

[0:11:37.9] SR: That’s hilarious.

[0:11:39.3] JC: 14 hours in the chair, he says.

[0:11:41.0] SR: Yeah, but his parents don't know.

[0:11:42.6] JC: He said, “I might have to wear a shirt through high school, college and a little beyond that.” Cut back to Johnny and we find out lifetime banned on Cobra Kai.

[0:11:52.7] SR: Yeah, interesting.

[0:11:54.2] JC: Miguel goes in to check on Johnny and he challenges him in a nice way, to be the way of the Cobra Kai. Don't quit. Don't give up. Johnny immediately wants to go fight off Valley. He's like, “That's not what I mean. There's probably a different approach,” and it works. Johnny’s motivated to plead his case and see what can be done about entering this tournament.

[0:12:16.8] SR: Yeah, he wants to go speak to the authorities, the committee, whoever runs the tournament, give Cobra Kai a chance. It’s 2018 for crying out loud.

[0:12:24.7] JC: Exactly. Now we're at Larusso Auto and I thought this is pretty funny, Amanda jokes with Daniel about how working with the bonsais is like going to third base. She's ribbing him for having a young protege in the office, in Robby, which is sweet.

[0:12:42.1] SR: Yeah, Amanda is okay with what's happening.

[0:12:44.5] JC: Yeah. She's seeing a good side of Daniel emerge, unlike the guy in previous episodes who's been obsessed with the feud that they have.

[0:12:52.4] SR: Sure, like when Daniel tried to get Johnny’s rent raised at the strip mall, Amanda was not having it, was not hearing it.

[0:12:59.3] JC: Hurting all other shop owners. Armenian restaurant and the convenience stores, whoever else was in there. Yeah, very short-sighted thinking.

[0:13:07.8] SR: Amanda is willing to chime in, give her thoughts, put her foot down. I do like her character. She'll tell it like it is.

[0:13:17.0] JC: Amanda's growing on me. Now we see Robby trimming a bonsai.

[0:13:22.7] SR: By the way, my brother-in-law, Larry White, is a – I don't know if he officially used the term bonsai master, but he's won bonsai tournaments. He teaches bonsai. He's part of a bonsai club. I even took a video of his bonsai garden. He's big on bonsai.

[0:13:35.9] JC: You say bonsai better than I do.

[0:13:37.4] SR: Bonsai. Because I learned from my brother-in-law. My brother-in-law taught me how to say bonsai.

[0:13:42.2] JC: Did he get into it because of the Karate Kid?

[0:13:44.9] SR: No, I don't think so. He maybe got into it from sushi, because he's a big sushi lover. In fact, he got me into sushi.

[0:13:51.7] JC: Did he get into sushi because of the Karate Kid?

[0:13:54.8] SR: I don’t know. He got me into sushi and he got me into a bonsai, but it all comes full circle as we sit down here and talk about this.

[0:14:02.2] JC: I love this scene when Daniel comes in, he's got some clippers in his suit jacket.

[0:14:07.0] SR: He's always got him there.

[0:14:08.3] JC: I don't know if you paid attention to this scene enough, because I saw this episode twice. He then pulls out another set of shears from his jacket.

[0:14:17.5] SR: That's funny.

[0:14:18.0] JC: It's pretty funny. It was a nice scene between him and Robby.

[0:14:22.4] SR: Sure.

[0:14:22.9] JC: Visualize what you want your future to look like and then you make it happen. Those are great words to live by.

[0:14:28.7] SR: Oh, there are wonderful nuggets in here. It turns you back on yourself, you're like, “Hmm. How can I apply that to my own life?”

[0:14:34.4] JC: This is why I could see that getting the two main actors, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka wasn't that hard, because this show has real heart.

[0:14:41.9] SR: Yeah, it does. It has heart, it has a message, it's about empowerment, it's about growth, it's about standing up for yourself. I'm loving every minute of it.

[0:14:49.5] JC: It's just as special in a lot of ways as the original movie. Now we see Robby, who gets a text message from Trey, one of the punks who wants to rob LaRusso Auto. Now one note about this text, the size of the text was humongous. Is Robby 65 and can't see his phone? Or was that for our benefit?

[0:15:09.5] SR: It said, “Don't let us down. See you tonight.” Had a little devil emoji.

[0:15:12.7] JC: Oh, yeah. Of course. We're back at Johnny’s apartment. For the first time ever, we see him in a suit. It looks pretty sharp.

[0:15:20.2] SR: Suit and tie.

[0:15:21.2] JC: He's got a briefcase, which is comical, because it's actually empty. It's totally a prop and he's talking to Miguel.

[0:15:28.7] SR: Yeah, and he offers advice on Miguel's date with Sam. Then Miguel's offering advice on the meeting with the committee.

[0:15:36.5] JC: Correct. Miguel's mentioning what he has planned for the date. He's going to go to the observatory, Griffith Park, observatory, it’s incredible. He's going to have 3-way chocolate ice cream. If it's clear outside, they look at the stars. Johnny's like, “The only part of that that makes any sense is the three-way,” which is probably right over Miguel's head.

[0:15:56.2] SR: Yeah. One thing you notice is our hero characters, there's an innocence to them.

[0:15:59.9] JC: Totally. Then Johnny tells Miguel the best place to take a date. That is –

[0:16:06.1] SR: Golf and stuff.

[0:16:07.2] JC: They are going to the golf and stuff, the very same one from the original Karate Kid, which is located in Norwalk, California.

[0:16:14.8] SR: I got to say though, they're totally cheating at miniature golf. They're using the putter as a pool cue, or they're just stuffing the ball through the hole. That stuff just drives me crazy, because I'm a purist. When it comes to miniature golf, I'm like, “Whoa, no. That's it. Seven strokes. Done. Moving off.” I'm like mister by the book when it comes to mini-golf.

[0:16:34.9] JC: It's a nice 80s date montage.

[0:16:37.2] SR: Oh, yeah. They're having a great time. They're bonding. They're getting along. It's going fantastic.

[0:16:40.5] JC: Beyond putt-putt, they played one of my favorite arcade games ever, the USA-Russia Hockey. Then there's some ski-ball. They did quite well on the ticket take, I must say.

[0:16:49.5] SR: Oh, yeah. Then they turn it in for a giant octopus prize.

[0:16:52.5] JC: Right.

[0:16:53.0] SR: That must have taken 500 tickets at least.

[0:16:55.3] JC: It took Miguel about a 150 bucks to get a $2 octopus. Anyway, cut to the all-valley meeting. There's a proposal to change the color of the mat, which has always been red for the last 30 years with a white fist on it. They want to make it a blue mat with a gold fist. These are the things they’re discussing at the all-valley meeting.

[0:17:19.5] SR: Yes. I love how Johnny sticks his head in and they're like, “Uh, the AAA meeting doesn't start till 9:00.” They just see him and know, “Oh, this guy must be a drunk.”

[0:17:28.6] JC: He stays and then he starts to tell them who he is and who comes in the room.

[0:17:34.0] SR: Oh, this moment really, I was like, “What? Daniel LaRusso walks in, he's on the committee.”

[0:17:39.1] JC: Of course, he is.

[0:17:41.0] SR: Cobra Kai has these little moments that just catch me off guard. I'm just like, “What?”

[0:17:46.8] JC: Meanwhile at LaRusso Auto, Trey and company arrive and Robby has a change of heart.

[0:17:54.7] SR: Yeah. He said, “I'm not going to give you the code, or he says I don't want to, or I'm not going to.” He said, “I get those two confused.”

[0:18:02.4] JC: Then a fight ensues.

[0:18:04.4] SR: Yeah, they try to kick his ass.

[0:18:05.7] JC: This is the first time we see Robby's training paying off.

[0:18:09.0] SR: Yeah. At this moment in time, I think Robby is at at point where I consider myself, where I have enough fight training to kick someone's ass who has had no fight training. He starts to kick their ass.

[0:18:19.9] JC: They outlast him, because he's still young.

[0:18:22.0] SR: There’s two of them.

[0:18:22.9] JC: There's two of them. He stood his ground. Robby's drawn a line in the sand and he's no longer with these guys.

[0:18:29.1] SR: Yeah, it's a pivotal moment. It's a turning point for this character.

[0:18:31.6] JC: It really is.

[0:18:32.3] SR: Then they get the better of him.

[0:18:33.6] JC: As they get the better of him and they probably could have hurt him more, what does he do?

[0:18:38.6] SR: He points up at the camera.

[0:18:40.4] JC: The security camera caught everything on tape. They say, “Nowhere to run.” He says, “Nowhere to hide,” which is a nice homage to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Classic hit. Okay, so now back at golf and stuff, Miguel and Samantha are playing basketball. By the way, Sal, I do very well in these basketball games at arcades.

[0:19:02.3] SR: I'm pretty good at that too.

[0:19:03.3] JC: When's the last time you were in an arcade and played on of these? Because I did it just a few months ago.

[0:19:07.2] SR: I'm pretty good at shooting hoops. I am. Not playing basketball, but shooting I'm pretty good.

[0:19:13.1] JC: All right, we might have to take this back on the road.

[0:19:15.1] SR: We’re going to take it to the streets.

[0:19:15.9] JC: I'm pretty good too. Okay, so they're talking about the Lakers, they do a fun photo booth. It's a fun day. The date is still in full force.

[0:19:22.9] SR: Well, there's a wonderful moment, they’re in the photo booth, they're about to take the picture and she grabs Miguel's arm and puts his arm around her and that's when you go, “Okay, she's with it. She likes him.”

[0:19:35.1] JC: Now we're back at the All-Valley sports arena. We learned that senseis Terry Silver and John Kreese and student Mike Barnes are the ones who have a lifetime ban for their unethical and unsportsmanlike conduct.

[0:19:50.8] SR: At one moment, Johnny says, “I don't even know who the Terry guy is.”

[0:19:55.1] JC: Kreese is dead, by the way.

[0:19:57.3] SR: Yes.

[0:19:57.5] JC: So he says.

[0:19:58.4] SR: That's what he says.

[0:19:59.6] JC: Then he goes on to give a pretty inspiring speech.

[0:20:02.8] SR: Yeah. He's basically saying that Cobra Kai is different today. I'm different. It's a different era. Give us a chance. He really pleads his case and some of the people on the committee are being swayed. Not Daniel, of course. Daniel is like, “No way. These guys were bullies. They have a lifetime ban. Sorry, not happening.”

[0:20:23.4] JC: All this leads to a vote. They asked Johnny if he would excuse himself for a second. Then they would do an internal vote.

[0:20:31.1] SR: Yeah. Johnny goes outside in a lobby area and they're going to have the vote.

[0:20:35.7] JC: Now we're back with Sam and Miguel. Miguel's going to show her a karate move, because I noticed this with people that take karate, self-included, you tend to want to show other people your moves. He gets Samantha up and he's trying to show her something, forgetting or not knowing that Samantha has a lot more training than him. What does she do to him?

[0:20:58.8] SR: She bust a move. She flips him on his back. She gets Miguel on his back.

[0:21:02.9] JC: On like one second.

[0:21:04.0] SR: Yeah. She has moves. In fact, I'm looking forward to when she really would just unleash. She flips Miguel, gets him on the ground and then sits on top of him and then kisses him.

[0:21:15.1] JC: Miguel is such a fun, warm, sweet kid. Samantha's great too, but he is awe that she bested him very quickly. Then she said, this is the best date, non-date that she's ever had and she gives Miguel a kiss.

[0:21:29.6] SR: Yes.

[0:21:29.4] JC: It's a very sweet moment and interrupted only by back at the All-Valley sports arena, what happens?

[0:21:38.2] SR: Johnny's waiting in the lobby area. Daniel walks out, says, “Congratulations Johnny.” That's when you realize, Johnny plead his case and the tournament committee has agreed to let Cobra Kai into the tournament.

[0:21:50.8] JC: Cobra Kai is back. Now we're at the Cobra Kai dojo and Johnny hangs out the official poster. Very reminiscent of the original Karate Kid, when Kreese had the poster in the dojo. Johnny is probably more excited now than we've ever seen him. He's hung the poster, he's drinking at Coors, he does a little kick. Miguel comes busting in who's also beaming.

[0:22:18.5] SR: Yeah. They're both in celebration mode. Johnny had his victory with the committee at the tournament and Miguel had his “victory date” with Samantha. Both these guys are on high and ready to celebrate.

[0:22:31.7] JC: Johnny says, “I'm the man.” He looks at Miguel and he's like, “Are you the man too?” It’s pretty funny. Then Johnny gets real liquor for an actual big boy toast.

[0:22:41.8] SR: Yeah, what do you think that was? They don't really show the bottle, but he pours it straight.

[0:22:45.9] JC: Like a scotch?

[0:22:46.2] SR: Maybe. Yeah.

[0:22:47.3] JC: Knowing Johnny, pretty lowbrow Scotch.

[0:22:50.3] SR: Plastic container for sure, but this looked like glass.

[0:22:53.3] JC: Johnny says, “Drink it. It'll put hair on your balls.” Miguel to that says, “Is that a good thing?” “To Cobra Kai,” Miguel says. Then Johnny says, “Never accept defeat.”

[0:23:05.2] SR: Yeah. They both have a drink and Miguel is like, “This stuff is strong.”

[0:23:08.9] JC: Yeah, it's probably his first drink in his life.

[0:23:10.7] SR: Probably his first drink.

[0:23:11.6] JC: We slowly pan into the All-Valley poster, of which I wouldn't mind having one of those.

[0:23:18.3] SR: Yes.

[0:23:19.6] JC: That wraps up a fantastic episode of Cobra Kai. I can't wait to see what happens next.

[0:23:27.1] SR: I can't wait either. I had to wrestle with Daniel’s character, because Karate Kid, he's the hero. Cobra Kai, Daniel’s not necessarily the hero. He is a character and if you're familiar with the Karate Kid, you have to reconcile that you're not necessarily rooting for Daniel exclusively. Now you're rooting for Cobra Kai as well. They’re talking about flip the script, Cobra Kai has flipped the script on the viewers.

[0:23:55.1] JC: I like these parallels that are happening and I'm rooting for both sides, but I don't know where they're going to intersect and what's going to happen. We’ll have to choose a side.

[0:24:05.2] SR: Yeah, especially as Miguel and Samantha get close.

[0:24:08.6] JC: There you have it.

[0:24:09.2] SR: Because that's an interesting scenario when Daniel’s daughter is dating Johnny’s main student. Very interesting.

[0:24:18.0] JC: Yes, it is. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we have. Please subscribe to us on Apple iTunes, or anywhere else you get your podcast from.
