we start driving traffic, we wanted to explain what this is because I vaguely remember someone bringing this up to me. And I was right in the middle of my first film and the festival run in 2007. And so one of my good friends was like, oh, man, you'd love this. And I think I even I don't think I watched it. But maybe I went to it for a second was like, Oh, this is kind of bastardizing Karate Kid. I just, I just forgot about it. Never thought about it again, until you brought it up the other day. And I'm glad you did.

only like, I think he was trying to put it on and I was distracted and I wasn't thinking karate kid back then he brought it up to me because we had gotten to a Halloween party in 2000. And I guess it was 2006. And I dressed up as Johnny Lawrence, I had a Cobra Kai shirt had the black GI and the whole bit. And I think he thought, Oh, I gotta tell Jason, he would get this. And I just wasn't even in my mind at that point in time. And so no, I did not see it in its entirety. And I frankly just forgot all about it until the other day.

Well, I saw this. When you first approached me about our show. Let's talk Cobra Kai, when you first approached me about it, I started kind of Googling and looking up Cobra Kai, a lot of the folklore a lot of the fan made items on YouTube in particular since it was on YouTube. And I saw it, but I saw a lot of a lot of stuff. So it didn't really stand out so much. But now here we are two seasons later. And now I go back and watch this thing. And I think holy cow, this video is amazing.

And I feel the same way. Here we are. We're so deep into Cobra Kai and karate kids back. You and I are singing the praises. So yeah, sometimes it's nice to find something that you haven't seen and discover it. It's like, oh, I never saw that movie. And you see it. And it's this incredible. And sometimes people that tell me like, oh, I never saw Reservoir Dogs. It's like, oh my gosh, can I watch it with you? Because you want to experience it with them? Yeah, so I think timing is right. And now is the time to say I didn't see it until this week. Well, and I loved it. So I'm super excited to talk about it. And we'll cover from head to toe as we do with everything else. It won't be as long as other episodes, but it'll be fun. Yeah,

So let's just jump in. And here's what we know. This video is made 2007 Like I said, and it was made by a filmmaker Pete Mitchell. Now no more Kings also has other band members from what I've read, which was Neil and Adam to Grady. if I mispronounce I apologize.

That was big. I saw that at the end of the video as well. The one I watched and it was on YouTube and I thought oh my gosh, and then I remember something had triggered in my mind. I thought someone years ago when I was in middle of our in the festivals and making documentaries. Someone told me that William Zabka had done some short films. So then I went on IMDb looked it up. And sure enough, he wrote and produced a short film and titled most that came out in 2004 and was nominated for an Oscar

wow but not part of the Karate Kid or Cobra universe.

No, but this shows that he had branched out and done something and had no directing credits on IMDb which is interesting. So this video doesn't even register on IMDb but yes, he you know wrote and directed the video and that was it blew my mind as well and I have if I didn't already have a ton of new found respect for Williams Hakka I have even more now. It blew my mind even more to see Martin Cove coming back is since a crease and you've got three of the original Cobra. Guys beyond Johnny. You've got Yes, Ron Thomas Rob Garrison rest in peace. It was wonderful seeing him and Tony O'Dell Yep, all original Cobra guys, and you have Pat e Johnson. And one scene which will save and we'll get into later. And let's not forget that you have a cameo from none other than rajmachi. Yes, yes, of course. So they cover their bases there and much Like Karate Kid two and three, no alley, so it was just perfect. Well, when

we get into the scene, there's sort of an alley look alike. I guess she's supposed to be you know, I know. But you know what I'm in the valley scene,

just to put a bow on what we were talking about with the filmmakers. So the video was a collaboration between no more kings, record label, astonish records, and chapter seven films, which is a film company in Los Angeles. So, you know, we've done a lot we've given all the, all the members credit. And now we can kind of delve in but you had mentioned some numbers there, you know, over would you say over a million, but I just quickly saw that Sweep the leg received over 800,000 views within its first week of release, and became the number one video on YouTube on March 16 2007. What was featured on Yeah, 2007

It's why they listen to it. And it earned nearly a million views on YouTube and was mentioned on VH ones best week ever online. Wow. So yeah, kudos to sweep the leg. Yeah. Now we're jumping in to the beats of the video, like we do with everything else. So we opened with audio from the Karate Kid, the Cobra Kai is to be exact, and you can hear it plain as day. The enemy deserves no mercy. And I liked that. I like that. We kind of know what's coming. And now we're riffing off the original movie. And we're going in, and now we see Banzai pizza. Best thin crust in the valley. Open at 11am to 10pm. Seven days a week. Sal, this place never closes.

Well. And of course, I want to make sure that we know when it says Best thin crust in the valley. Valley is none other than the San Fernando Valley not to be confused with other valleys.

Yeah, a very special treat for you. Mainly 90s fans for this cameo. Dennis Haskins who played Mr. Richard Belding. On Saved by the Bell, making a cameo as the pizza shop owner. I couldn't get it if he was Pete's father because he did say son he said son twice. Yeah, he's talking to father as well. Okay, so it's his dad owns a pizza shop.

So what is this advice He bestows upon his son? This is where

we have Dennis take on the sort of Miyagi esque Pat Marita role. He gives Pete, his pizza delivery guy, a lesson on balance. You have rock and roll, you have pizza. Life is about balance, rock and roll and pizza. So he's trying to any fan of The Karate Kid knows the parallel here and knows the origin of this teaching. But Pete says, I want to rock and roll. Right.

And I like that he says this while he's trimming a bonsai. Yes, yes, it says and you can tell he's got the long hair. He's got the rock'n'roll hair, if you will. And he takes the pizza and exits. And now we see Johnny Lawrence skating with a radio plain, Sweep the leg. You can kind of hear it over this jam box, if you will. And so describe this for the audience.

He has the radio up on his shoulder. In the former of ghetto blaster style, or beach roller blader, a roller skater style up on a shoulder against his ear. He's actually actually lip synching. And he's wearing a speedo, a red speedo and some sort of robe. Right and like a robe and

here's here's where I want to give props to William Zabka. Because this video being written and directed by William Zabka. This is him kind of satirizing himself mocking himself. Oh, yeah, for sure. Not a lot of people can do that. Not a lot of people who take themselves way too seriously, can satirize themselves. William Shatner is when it comes to mind who kind of satirizes himself he makes sort of a he mocks himself. Right? And this is what William Zabka is doing. He's mocking with Johnny Lawrence

and think about the time so it's easy for us to say this now and be like, wow, you know, Cobra Kai, so successful at the time, all that William Zabka had done not all but he was in the Karate Kid. And then he was in that scene and the opening of karate kid too. And that was it. That was it forever. There was no Cobra Kai, it wasn't in vogue again, hadn't connected again. How many years have he tried to live down being Johnny Lawrence so maybe it was a way of just kind of exercising some of those demons at the time?

Well, I did have this the treat I say the special surprise of Seen William Zabka. In the beginning of National Lampoon's European Vacation, oh, yeah, of course. helmed by Chevy Chase. I'm watching this movie. They're they're at the table talking about their upcoming European vacation, hence the title. And there's William Zabka. As the boyfriend of the Daughter, what a special treat and what a surprise, I was not expecting this. And there he is, you know, being loved on by

chevy chase his daughter, and you got to see back to school if you haven't seen it in a while.

Okay, I haven't seen back to school in many years. So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing that. And that's, I want to give it up to The Cinephiles. I know that in previous episodes, I've talked about cinephiles, and I have a newfound respect for them. Because what happens is, and we talked about this earlier, when you watch something later, you're in a different mindset, you're a different person, and you're watching something 10 years go by, you're a different person, and then you watch something again. And it really does make a difference. So I really, I have a newfound respect for people who watch content over and over which I've never been one of those people, but I understand it now because you watch it with different eyes.

I also remember him and just one of the guys so he kind of played that blonde cocky guy to a tee. And again, maybe this was a chance to kind of make fun of it. And even in the scene he's wearing like a ridiculous blonde wig. I'm not mistaken. It's just it's just so out of character. And perfect that he's doing it. And well it

it shows Johnny Lawrence down on his luck and for you Cobra Kai fans, does that sound familiar? I mean, how does our show Cobra Kai open? With Johnny Lawrence down on his luck and this video from 2007 shows Johnny Lawrence down on his luck and again, Williams aapke as Johnny Lawrence down on his luck in the fallout of the 84. All Valley.

this might be the roll. So let's continue. Now we cut to crease. And I love this sound. It's an homage to the classic scene from Raising Arizona in which Randall Tex Cobb shoots a snake while smoking a cigar and riding on his motorcycle. It's actually a really great reenactment. I must say.

Oh my gosh, I have seen that. Or maybe you forgot.

Good man. So now we're at a trailer and of course it's Johnny's trailer. And Sal, what is Johnny doing? Inside the trailer.

Sal Rodriguez: 12:48

Johnny is laying on the couch watching the Karate Kid on his television. Dogs are chained up outside. Members of Cobra Kai are playing cards we have Bobby Tommy Jimmy. And then there's a woman there. Now I didn't know who that woman was who plays either his girlfriend or his wife. She gives him a hard time about the fact that he's watched this movie. Every day for 20 years. He watches this movie laying on his couch in his trailer. And by the way, I just want to be clear when I use the word trailer. Don't confuse trailer with mobile home or prefabricated homes. Those are different. Yeah, a trailer is what you can hitch up to a truck and haul and he's in there with his old Cobra Kai buddies. laying on the couch. There's also some other dude there a black dude there look like he's maybe rolling a joint or something. I couldn't tell what he was doing. What he's doing something probably unsavory at the table. And then Williams Africa is being bitched out by his wife or girlfriend

that is happening and this scene is so meta. It's just perfect. Here is the guy from the movie watching the movie every day. You know, maybe hoping for a different outcome in the fight sequence. And and of course Johnny is also sporting a nice porno stash if I might ask a great mustache. And so now we cut to the pizza kid Pete. He shows up in this van and kind of frisbee tosses the pizza to these dogs. And another guy leaves the van with a guitar so we know something is brewing more than just a pizza delivery or back inside the trailer. And you've kind of already hit on some of these things. But so I love just beyond the people and the girlfriend, griping him out. I like that there's a life size cardboard image of him our crease, I can't really tell who it is. There's little trophies. And I love that she also says his name's not Johnny, because the Cobra Kaiser like they're all buying into it. And she's like, No, this isn't Johnny. So like it's pretty hilarious that this is his life. He's hit this bottom this rock bottom. And I don't know what that guy's doing. I don't know the significance of the guy but I like how the Cobra Kaiser like, in another room. This is a tiny trailer from the exterior, but yet they're in like another room kind of looking on. And what are they playing cards? Is that what they're doing?

It looks like they're playing cards, but uh, yeah, I do like how the guy the other guy at the table says, Johnny, she's got to go. Yeah, she's got she's got to go there.

Yeah, I don't really know where he's from or where he fits in. But it's a nice component because it's just bizarro land. What's going on? Yeah. And then

like, I use that word. I like I use that word meta. This is definitely Mel This is a movie. This is a character from a movie coming out of the movie was five watching the movie Written and directed by the actor who played the role this is this is meta before meta.

Jason Connell: 15:52

I know right? And so now it goes full music video mode as the band begins to play and it's essentially sow and oh maj to the cars classic you might think video and I don't know if you're a car's fan or were but rest in peace, Benjamin or and Rico classic. But I was and this video was big time. And the video had the big flying like ricco cassock turns into a fly and then things are happening, which are about to happen in this video. I mean, Johnny sees the band on his own TV. And then he sees the lead singer on his milk carton and the end he has a bandana, the lead singer has a bandana now, and then he becomes a fly. And it's just like, oh my gosh, totally ended that video. And actually, it's a pretty catchy track. And I'm starting to get into it and it's really an old school video vibe. I really enjoy it.

Sal Rodriguez: 16:51

Yeah, you have all the worlds start to meld into one world you have Johnny's world there in his trailer watching the Karate Kid you have the Karate Kid universe there. And then you have Pete Mitchell's no more kings pizza delivery guy universe, you have these three universes that start to blend and converge. And now here we are in one world. And

Gianni being a product of the 80s himself and a little bit older than us. They really captured what the videos were like then. So I much appreciated where they took this thing. And it totally changes. It's one thing. And then it's something completely different. As Johnny, he's like singing into the camera blow drying his hair. So it's just all these crazy shots that lead to shaving his mustache. And then he goes full Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon mode as he flies out of the trailer doing like a kick.

Sal Rodriguez: 17:49

It's crazy. I like how you referenced Crouching Tiger. Yes, I did. Notice that. If you look in the wake of Crouching Tiger, which was in the year 2000, a lot of movie started this, flying through the air floating through the air, a type of kung fu or Karate thing. And this definitely embodies that. So you have Johnny Lawrence just literally flying out of the front door of his trailer flying towards Pete, who at this point, I think is now embodying Daniel Russo I should

also said that he's doing like a flying sidekick. So you're kind of curled up and he's just flying which is hilarious like you'd see in those old cheesy martial arts movies and it's like flying which is doesn't make sense, but I'm sure it was fun to do. And you're absolutely right. Pete's taken on the Danielson role and they go into a effects heavy fight sequence when they're jumping up onto the trailer itself. And that kind of slow mo very Crouching Tiger Angley would be very proud of this, of this choreography and, and stunt work. And so I also love what pops up out of the pool.

Sal Rodriguez: 18:54

Well, if you look at that little pool, we have Pete Metro kind of walking on water, right the Crouching Tiger thing. And then you have all these guys in the pool. Now I couldn't tell if these were the Cobras that you have these guys in the pool who are wearing the Halloween skeleton costume as Johnny Lawrence wore in the Karate Kid movie.

So good what a wonderful tip of the cap there to not having them there. And they're just kind of creepy because they're not doing anything but like coming up and just looking. You know menacing. It's very bizarre but also just great.

It's very artistic. You know, I got a credit William Zabka I mean, you know, he's impressed me so much not of course his original performance now you have Cobra Kai now we're looking back at this video. This guy is very talented. He's not just a good actor. He's very very creative. Yeah, absolutely. And if you listen to the lyrics if you listen to the no markings lyrics, as this is all happening one of the lyrics which really caught me of course, but I caught a crane kick to the face. Oh good. So this is now this song is being told All this is now Johnny's POV, sung by Pete who in the video now is embodying Daniel Russo. So talk about meta. This is a lot of worlds and universes overlapping now.

And the song is we're not playing a sample of it, we encourage you, like Sal said earlier to go watch it, but it really is catchy because the choruses sweep the lake, and then they'll drop a Johnny in there every once in a while. Right, John? Sweep the lake. It's really catchy. It's repetitive, it's fun, and it keeps things moving. And now we are of all places literally dropped into the all Valley championship. They come in through the ceiling, or there and they've recreated it, Sal. I mean, it's, it's astonishing.

Sal Rodriguez: 20:49

The original referee, Pat E. Johnson, is there in the video. Now by this point in time, now that Martin Cove has appeared as crease reprising his role. At this point, I'm watching this going, how the hell did they pull this together? This is no more kings debut single. This was off their first album, I believe. Now we can talk about where they've been since but this is where they started. How did they pull this together? What strings did they pull? Who did they know? How did this new band literally bring the Karate Kid universe together? And at this point, here we are in 2020. This was Cobra Kai in 2007. It was 11

Jason Connell: 21:33

years before Cobra Kai launched but they had Williams zakat answer your questions, however, they got him. I'm sure he had a lot to do with bringing the others together. So go get him. Let him write direct. Maybe they knew each other. Maybe it was the companies that I mentioned earlier, a collaboration. But there's no way you get Patti Johnson. Martin Cove, the three original Cobra guys, Ralph Masaccio. Without Williams Zack is involvement.

Sal Rodriguez: 22:01

Yeah, that's very impressive. And that's why I wanted to do this episode, Jason is when you look at where Cobra Kai is right now, where we are right now. And then you look at this video from 2007. Any fan has to sit there with their jaw open, and just be absolutely amazed by by what they're seeing.

Absolutely. So now back to the action. This fight sequence goes on. And all of a sudden salads duel crane kicks with a matrix type special effects as they kind of both levitate right and they're both kind of in the crane position with their arms out. And I love how Rob Garrison gives us his classic line. Oh, which is

get him a body bag. And what did you say? Did you like yo? Yes, yes. So he does that from the trailer. Yeah, but it's bleeding into that world. We're here we have William Zabka. Doing the crane Johnny Lawrence doing the crane against Daniel Russo. You will not see this anywhere. But this video.

Except for all Miguel did the Crane Kick with his first move and all Valley and Season One of Cobra Kai but yes, it's just it's all spinning around in our head. And Sal they get Laker girl type dancers at this particular all Valley. Nice idea.

They're back in 84. But it's sort of a little bit reimagined. Yes. Yeah, I would say and there is a quick cut back to Johnny on the couch. So I think that lets the viewer know that this is in his imagination. Yes, he is still in the couch in his trailer watching the Karate Kid. This is in his head.

Jason Connell: 23:44

And what did I say earlier, hoping for a different outcome. As he watches the karate kid wants to see it go a different way. And this would be that way. Which leads us to Johnny doing a jumping front kick. And he does the unthinkable sale. He's won. And thus would be his third of Valley championship.

Sal Rodriguez: 24:08

We see Johnny Lawrence beat Pete Mitchell embodying Daniel Russo. Thus proclaiming Johnny Lawrence winner of the 1984 all Valley finals

exactly which would have been three in a row for Johnny Lawrence. And there will never be car dealerships litres of car auto and the valley erase Back to the Future style. Daniel Russo and all of his success. We've just whitewashed the past. But he wins. They hoist him up like they do Daniel on the original film. They give him the trophy. Pete does not give him the trophy though, which would have been really nice if Pete had come over and said, You're all right, Johnny.

Sal Rodriguez: 24:55

Johnny, I would have loved also if you notice the trophy was blue instead of red Yeah, that was very much look the same as the original trophy, but instead of being a reddish color, it was a bluish color.

Right. So now we fade to black, and sow as we come in, to frame to focus. What do we see?

Now we're back to where it all started. Here we have Johnny Lawrence in a Speedo in his robe with his funky hair, radio on top of his shoulder, riding down the street in front of the Seven Seas apartment building where Daniel Russo used to live and Mr. Miyagi and Mr. Miyagi used to live where and where that all started and who hits him, he gets hit by a car, driven by who? Danielson. I'm so blown away by what we're seeing. I appeal to all of our listeners, as everybody who hears me watch this video.

Jason Connell: 25:50

So Sal, did you recognize what kind of car Danielson was driving?

Sal Rodriguez: 25:55

Actually, I didn't I could not make out the vehicle. No. Did you

Jason Connell: 25:58

know I was so in awe of the moment. So Daniel hits Johnny, who lands on the windshield with his face smashed up against it. And he's trying to like get his bearings, and then we kind of see that it's rough macho Danielson, Daniel Russo, and who kind of recognizes them and Johnny's a bit out of it. And then he gasses it and sends Johnny flying over the top, who lands in the street. And of course, Daniel just once he cleanses teeth, checks his hair. Yeah, moseys right along.

Sal Rodriguez: 26:36

Yeah, he does some primping, some proofs. So you're saying that you believe Daniel intentionally hit the gas once he realized it was Johnny Lawrence.

Jason Connell: 26:46

I think that was how they it was tongue in cheek, I think that's what they were going for. And really, okay.

Sal Rodriguez: 26:51

Okay. And I didn't really see that. Because if you look at Ralph macho, is giving us lots of different expressions on his face, right. And I didn't see that any of those expressions were, I'm going to hit the gas and you're going to be flying over. They were just, I thought they had a sort of frozen in time eye contact thing happening. And then William just kept flying over the vehicle, as as he was already doing. The way I

see it is Johnny wants to rewrite the past. And I would say, looking at this from Daniel's Point of View. He's got no love last for Johnny either. So I think that's just kind of what it was like, Hey, I'm gonna click on my teeth, check my hair. Who's this guy? He's over it. He's out. I mean, it was just a throwaway thing. wasn't trying to be on the nose. It was, you know, it had its own perspective. It played with things. And again, the Karate Kid, although it's always been a amazing movie and a popular franchise. It was not as popular as it was in 2007. I mean, no one was talking about it. No, the Jackie Chan film came out after that, as well. I think so. So it was at a time that maybe a low point. So he was just taking unique things. And it's really ingenious, like you said earlier, very creative. And the song, it was super catchy. And these guys must have been big fans of the 80s and karate kid. And it was a real treat and a joy. And if we get William Zabka on our podcast, to interview him and speak with him about not just his role as Johnny Lawrence, but just his career. I'd love to know how this came to be.

And he was on, I think it was the fourth one, which was David Cronenberg's, the fly, the 1986 remake of the classic film, and it was wonderful. You know, I met Jason originally when he ran film festivals, a few in the US, and then one in London as well. And I hosted and moderated his film festivals, namely the LA United Film Festival. So that's where we became friends and associates. And I love talking about movies with this guy. In fact, he hired me to literally just talk about movies at these film festivals. So I'm happy to be here doing this, whether we're in front of a live crowd, or here with our listeners. So yeah, I had a great time doing let's talk movies. Definitely a lot of fun, sort of a different feel because we're not in the Cobra Kai universe, not in the Karate Kid universe. Correct. But definitely a lot of fun.
