Jason Connell:

Welcome to Just curious media. This is let's talk Cobra Kai. I'm Jason Connell.

Sal Rodriguez:

And I'm Sal Rodriguez.

Jason Connell:

All right sound we are back for a very unique episode. I gotta say.

Sal Rodriguez:

Very unique. We've never done anything quite like this. No. This is in the wheelhouse. Yes, but kind of on the fringe on the fringe, but kind of related because of John G. Albertson. Yes. So we're near and we're far in. Here we are. Yeah,

Jason Connell:

it's, it is a stretch, but since it does have John G. Appleton, adjacent, some of you has magic dust sprinkled on it. Yes. We're talking about this new special thing coming this week. You put this on my radar, and I was like, oh my god, I'm not only going we're going to talk about it. Yeah. And that is this rocky for Rocky verse, Drago. And we're previewing that because if you don't even know what that is, you're in store for something special. So rocky for one of the many Rocky movies Yes, the best just alone John G Appleton. He directed the original which one best picture and 77. He also directed rocky five. All the other rocky sound directed by

Sal Rodriguez:

Sylvester Stallone. And

Jason Connell:

every single one of them from Rocky to Rocky Balboa, which would have been the sixth installment written by

Sal Rodriguez:

Sylvester Stallone.

Jason Connell:

That's impressive.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh, yeah, it is. It is really I mean, I think people who aren't what cinephiles for lack of a better term. Yeah. But that's huge. That is huge, huge. I don't think there's any franchise that can claim that.

Jason Connell:

And he's another things of course, you may have heard of him. Yeah, very impressive. But here's the deal. We're highlighting rocky four, because, again, this is a special engagement. And so why don't you tell us who's bringing us this special engagement?

Sal Rodriguez:

This is very exciting. This is a company that I know fairly well, because I've been to several of their events. And they're called Fathom Events. And just to be clear, we are not endorsed or sponsored by Fathom Events, giving them a shout out tonight for this special occasion. Fathom Events is a company that puts on special engagements at movie theaters across the nation. I have had the pleasure of seeing Ultimate Fighting Championship events, movie theaters through Fathom Events. So fantastic. And then they also put on Gone With the Wind that took my mother to see Gone With the Wind on the big screen. That was a lot of fun. I mean, movies from 1939. Yeah, and I'd never seen it never seen it in its entirety, amazing film. And thanks to Fathom Events, I was able to go and see that you sure you don't work there. So no, you know what? I'm very fond of Fathom Events. And guess what I found out because I'm always checking, you know, ever since the COVID. shutdowns I'm like, Well, what's coming back now? So I just found out that Fathom Events. has this amazing event happening? Yes. And it's on Thursday. It is nationwide. This is bittersweet for me though. Because even though I told you about it, yes, you did. I tried to get a ticket and I could not get a ticket. They're sold out in my area.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, so I went to several theaters online and finally found one yesterday secured tickets. But here is what the event is. Yeah. does have something to do with Rocky four. Absolutely. And the reason it's called Rocky versus Drago is because this is a special Director's Cut, because slide directed this one I said earlier, and it has 40 minutes of never seen before footage in it from the 85 classic movie now. It is this Thursday, November 11 2021. And not only is it going to be streaming and all the cities sound all these venues, yeah, but tell them who else is going to be there.

Sal Rodriguez:

They're going to have a special q&a with Mr. Stallone himself. And the idea is if you can get into the theater, what I was planning was that I would be in the theater here on the west coast at 5pm. Jason's in the theater at 8pm. On the on the east coast, where they're both live Stallone's there live, it's going to be fantastic. Well, as it turns out, Salone is going to be live Jason is going to be there live, I will be somewhere in the parking lot wandering around wondering what's going on in there. So hey, if anybody can get tickets, right now, if you hear this, if you can get somehow get tickets do so because they are sold out around me. And I would imagine lots of other places.

Jason Connell:

So I called the venue today that we're going to see this in and ask the theater manager because I read on there again on fathom that. It's select theaters are capable of doing the q&a. The q&a was long. So I called the theater manager said Hey, is your theater one that's going to have that capability or they have it? He said yes. Nice. I was elated. Because if you said no, Sal, I think I would have looked for more tickets somewhere else. Yeah, that's part of the experience.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh, yeah. You want the full experience and that's what I was looking forward to. And I was I actually went down. Anybody who knows me knows I hate paying fees. If I can avoid paying a fee. And anytime you buy tickets online by the way back in my day, you could buy tickets online without fees. But now you got to pay a fee but guess when you don't have to pay a fee if you can go to the box office in person, you do not have to pay a fee. So I went to do that I went up to Universal CityWalk not far from where I live. box office opens in an hour. I sat around and waited like an idiot for an hour.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, as you drove and waited, they sold out.

Sal Rodriguez:

While I was waiting there, they sold out. I went in there. I want to buy a ticket for Thursday. They're like sold out. I'm like, Ah, so there we go.

Jason Connell:

I'm sorry. So you got to tell me what happens. I'll just put on my Zoom live. Well, I meant Yeah. I won't get in trouble. I'll do a whole thing. Yeah. Total bootleg. Yeah. Great audio on that. Jason. Really good stuff.

Sal Rodriguez:

It'll be like rerun recording the Doobie Brothers.

Jason Connell:

Well, I am so so stoked. Thanks for putting this on my radar. The only event I've gone to that Fathom put on was amazing. It was the room was classic movie the room. You're tearing me apart. It was so much fun. He wasn't there. I know. He goes there. Tommy Wenzhou or whatever his name is? Yeah, we know he goes to some and I didn't see him. But we had such a good time. Because it's a packed house. These are sold out events and hate coming from festivals like myself and you know this sell. We had sold out screenings, you have an energy when you just go see a normal movie at the box office. The tendency is to, you know, like, kind of stay contained. Right. Now if you go see a horror movie I saw like paranormal activity. Yeah, you're a little bit more outgoing and rambunctious. But when you go to an event, yeah, it's a whole other thing. Festivals. It's like you're waiting to engage and, and shout out or applaud or there's the filmmaker. He's coming up to do a q&a and are he's coming up to do an intro. Well, this is going to be next next level. This would be like when I saw this movie in the theater as a kid because rocky four was big. I was 14 years old in the theater with my father. You know, almost punching the seat in front of you. Because he's just getting all stoked. Well, this is gonna be magnetic. I'm telling you.

Sal Rodriguez:

That's fantast a great memory because I never saw rocky for the big screen. I remember seeing it at a friend's house maybe by the time it went up on HBO or maybe not even HBO hate to go old school in my area they had on TV and they had select TV. Yeah, but I did not see rocky for it in the theaters that's why I was big time excited for this so man, I'm going to be living vicariously through you on Thursday night.

Jason Connell:

Wow, I wish you could be there maybe a ticket oh come up look on Craigslist look wherever right list. Yeah, just love people cancel. Very interesting.

Sal Rodriguez:

I will check Oh rocky

Jason Connell:

for it's really a sign of the time. So it's such a movie born out of the cold war USA versus Soviet Union. And here's the synopsis just for those that don't remember because you know, rocky ones this beautiful movie that again, one best picture. So it's, it's for now. John G Appleton. It's dark. It's gloomy. It's triumphant. It's why he got to do the Karate Kid because it's in good hands and obviously it worked. But then rocky to you know, he he loses in rocky one just let you know rocky spoiler. I know. It's a little bit old, so I can get away with it. Rocky too. He's triumph and he beats creed. But the movies also gritty and very similar. Or rocky three. I also love but it's very 80s Yeah, you know, they introduce Mr. T Clubber Lang and, and Rocky is now a star in the first two movies. He's broke. He's got nothing. Yeah, now he's got money, fame fortune, and then rocky fours off those coattails and he's a champ and then creed gets killed another spoiler. And I know I know it's alive. But these are. These are old movies. Let's so they're so different when they work. And so here's the synopsis. For rocky for Rocky Balboa proudly holds the world heavyweight boxing championship, but a new challenger has stepped forward. Drago, a six foot four 260 pound fighter who has the backing of the Soviet Union.

Sal Rodriguez:

It was perfect does.

Jason Connell:

I must break you. Yes. It's so amazing. Yeah. That it really will be like U S A. It's reminded me a Miracle on Ice. Yeah, it's got all the components and to round it out with this cast. You have Dolph Lundgren playing Ivan Drago. Yeah, we have Talia Shire, playing Adrian, of course. And she's sister to Francis Ford Coppola in real life.

Sal Rodriguez:

What? Why am I just learning this?

Jason Connell:

I didn't know this. Talia

Sal Rodriguez:

Shire is Francis for a couple of sister.

Jason Connell:

Yes, that's a sister. Holy cow. Absolutely never. No. Hello. And Bert young plays Polly Bert Young's fantastic Carl Weathers Apollo Creed Nice. Choose Story Fun fact, I was on a flight with Carl Weathers. We're heading to London. I was going to the festival. I've said this before I know I have Yeah. Lance Henderson was on the fly. Yes, yes. He was with Carl Weathers are in a movie together and a third person and a third person not with them was also on said flight and that was Rudy. Sean Austin.

Sal Rodriguez:

Ah, yeah. What an odd cast.

Jason Connell:

Well fly I felt very safe. Very. Also in the movie Brigitte Nielsen. Oh, he's like Mila. I ran into her one time and IKEA and she was a Flavor Flav true story. Oh, what? Yeah. And I didn't talk to him. I was like, Oh my You never told me this before. True story. And then to round it out. The Godfather of Soul is in this movie sound who is that? James Brown. Rest in peace.

Sal Rodriguez:

That was Eddie Murphy as James Brown actually.

Jason Connell:

got swept up. That's right.

Sal Rodriguez:

And you know what I want to say, for the benefit of the toy collectors out there. There's a whole slew of fantastic Rocky Action figures made by Jax Pacific you can pick them up in years past and then NECA the national entertainment collectibles Association made a whole slew of Rocky Action figures that were on cutting edge at the time as far as articulation and artistry so you have good sculpt and articulation at the same time combination. So yeah, you can pick up some good looking Dolph Lundgren figures, Carl Weathers figures there is I know a Brigitte Nielsen I've seen that too. I have seen the Carl Weathers wearing the red, white and blue outfits similar to what James Brown wore in Rocky for, you know, the whole patriotic theme. So they do have that so hey, go out there. If you love the Rocky franchise, there are some cool collectibles available or creed wore that outfit. He did wear that but didn't James Brown wore something similar when he sang live in in America. Yeah, and Jason, I want you to know that rocky four was actually the first Rocky movie I ever saw. So guess what? My friends somehow we're gonna see this on TV. We're all very excited. We knew about rocky I knew about rocky saw rocky four. And I was like, okay, I can now I got to see the rest. And then I saw the rest but I started the Rocky franchise with Rocky for

Jason Connell:

that is weird. That's when I like meet people like yeah, I started with Back to the Future too. It's a great it's it's like a younger that much younger, I actually saw Rocky, the original the original HBO. So Rocky, part two on HBO, and then 345 and six I sell on the theater. And now rocky for Rocky first, Drago, I'm seeing as a theater. Anyway, there's that. So yeah, this is gonna be really, really exciting. I can't believe we're doing it. This leads to so many conversations sell about what other movies have 20 3040 more minutes that they're going to do this to you know, I mean, this is selling out. This isn't just happening because as as an AI, it's selling out which is going to lead to streaming we should say so it's one night engagement. And then the next day, you can stream this wherever you stream. Oh, is that the case? I didn't know that. That's what I read. So in Jim's involved with that, so I believe it's going to be available because he can't just not everyone's going to make it that night. It's selling out. It's creating buzz, but I want to see more movies do this. I want to see the Karate Kid release a director's cut. You know recipes. John G. Albertson. But somebody's involved someone has footage. We would eat that upsell. Oh yeah. Creo que por to do it. According to par three, why not? Just release it?

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, because you know, I expected to go there and buy a ticket. Yeah, no, no, I know. And I looked at all I checked all the theaters around me. I'm willing to drive up to 1520 miles and we'll need to drive. No, nothing on

Jason Connell:

Craigslist. I'm tell I will chakra open up. So anybody interested? Please look now so I'll tell them the website.

Sal Rodriguez:

It's Fathom events.com And they got this and lots of other stuff. coming through the pipeline. I know. I'm gonna see West Side Story the 60th anniversary of West Side Story is going to be coming up early December through Fathom Events. I'm gonna be seeing that take my girlfriend see that because we have a friend who was actually in it our friend Frankie Travis was in west side stories a little. So that'll be fun to see. So yeah, stay tuned to Fathom Events, guys. Again, not sponsored yet. I like that. Yeah, check out Fathom Events, guys and check out rocky vs. Drago, if you can get a ticket.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, I did one question for yourself. Yes. On our recent episode, that Darrell Fidel episode, which is a classic instant classic. So yes, yes. We were talking about how some characters get recognized for their first name others for their last name, right? That's correct. It wasn't Darrell was fuddle. But yes, it wasn't Lawrence. It was Johnny. It wasn't Lusa. It was Daniel but you know what I mean? And sure some guys didn't have last names Dutch and Tommy but Bobby did but this is interesting. Because they took rocky verse Drago, they kind of did a mix match. They didn't make it rocky verse Ivan or Stallone, Drago. I think they took the name with the bigger punch No pun intended.

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, because there's only one Rocky and there's only one Drago whereas there are other Stallone's you got his mother They're and his brother. They're also Stallone. Yeah. And as far as Ivan, I don't know, that's kind of generic Russian name. It could be anybody. Right, but there's only one Drago. Only one Rocky. It could have been full names though to Rocky Balboa versus Ivan Drago. And it's a bit clunky.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, this is good rocky verse Drago I like I just thought that's interesting.

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm big time excited. Really I was I'm still excited even though I'm not even going. Very excited for anybody who is going very excited for you Jason have a good time. And I look forward to hearing all about it play by play after the event.
