Jason Connell:

Just curious. Welcome to Just curious media. This is let's talk Cobra Kai. I'm Jason Connell.

Sal Rodriguez:

And I'm Sal Rodriguez.

Jason Connell:

All right, so we are here. Long time coming about a year, about a year for season four of Cobra Kai, can you believe it?

Sal Rodriguez:

No, I can't believe it. I really can't. I can't believe we're here. I can't believe we're doing this. I can't believe I saw the episode. I can't believe you saw the episode.

Jason Connell:

Right now. I have not talked to you since before New Year. So Happy New Year.

Sal Rodriguez:

Happy New Year. Happy New.

Jason Connell:

And I don't know where you are. And watching Of course, we can tell each other but we will not go any further than this episode. Because there could be some purists out there saying Oh, yeah, that go one at a time. Now. That would be crazy. I'd love that. But if they did that, then we are not going to give spoilers we're going to take one episode at a time and savor the whole way there.

Sal Rodriguez:

That's the problem is you or I or anybody may want to just savor one episode at a time week by week. But the whole world's full of landmines. You're going to be on live in a cave. Yeah, exactly. You really can't do it. But I will tell you this Jason, my goal was to at least bench five episodes. Yep. Due to the schedule due to the travel due to the weather, or other delays in Los Angeles. The weather. I mean, the rain was ridiculous, and we never have it, so it's even more ridiculous when that happens. It comes. So unfortunately, or fortunately, you're only halfway through the first episode. I only see the first 15 minutes. No, I only saw season four episode one only. That's it.

Jason Connell:

But oh, this is like old school sound. This is like season one, season two.

Sal Rodriguez:

But I want to say this I want to mention this. I did warm up by watching Karate Kid three. And then season three episode 10. Okay, so I feel like I am right where I need to you

Jason Connell:

did and just to be clear. So back in the day season one and season two of Cobra Kai went one episode. I did and I remember that I never we never gave spoilers because you would have known what's going on so so that's cool. I like that as well. I will not give anything away even when we talk after the episode. You're

Sal Rodriguez:

good about that. You are Yeah, I don't want to ruin it for you've seen what five episodes the whole thing,

Jason Connell:

the entire thing. four episodes on Friday for on Saturday to on Sunday. And a lot of thinking digesting who and then watching one again today to do notes

Sal Rodriguez:

because I want to ask you questions about the season but I'm not gonna know it.

Jason Connell:

Well, let's start off by giving a quick thanks to our new sponsor. Jason Connell:

Very good. Okay, so Cobra Kai, of course, is brought to us by Netflix. The release date of this and all episodes in the season is December 31 2021. Of course, this is season four, episode one. Let's begin. And so we've usually guessed the ratings. Do you want to take a shot at their rating for this particular episode? Or just let me give it to you your call. You know,

Sal Rodriguez:

Jason, it's been a while you're rusty at that say go ahead and go

Jason Connell:

8.4 rating on IMDb, which is very good. Yeah. Okay, solid. And these numbers are going to start moving all over the place because this is brand new content. Yeah. The synopsis for this first episode is Miyagi dough, Eagle Fang and Cobra Kai are training for the all Valley karate tournament. Yeah, that's a fair assessment. And also we're coming back to something like we talked about earlier. It's been a year, it's hard to believe it's been that long, because when I got into the show, Season One, season two, we're already out. So I discovered it. And I mow through those 20. Right. And then we waited a long time because the pandemic and the hold back and but this is not as long as that but it feels like it's our I even forgot that we do these types of episodes. We've done so many special episodes. In the meantime, we invent shows. And it's like, oh yeah, this is our bread and butter right here.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, we actually dissect the actual show, versus just things related to the universe.

Jason Connell:

Right, right. Yeah. So I'm ready to jump into the scenes. If you are anything else to add. Let me know speak now forever. Hold your peace. Well,

Sal Rodriguez:

I'll just say this. Say this publicly. I'm going to try to just do one episode a week.

Jason Connell:

Oh my gosh, the restaurant.

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm going to try that. My only concern is again, the spoilers out there in the world. So if I can avoid that, yeah, then I could have just a wonderful relaxing, pleasantly paced 10 weeks nice with you and all of our listeners a one episode at a time. I would love to do that. We'll see how it goes. I suggest

Jason Connell:

turn off Wi Fi of all your devices. Immediately. I know I know. And your cellular connection, everything just kill it. All right. Let's Jump in. I'm ready. So we open in Malibu, same stunning home from the trailer course Terry Silver's house, and Sal, he's in a rope. And he's playing some Gianluca. Luisi, some piano, some famous pianist, and he's He's really doing an amazing job. I mean, listen, Terry Silva has some skills. No, wait, how did you know that? That he was I looked it up and I use my Shazam app to identify the site.

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm a big fan of Phantom of the Opera. He was very phantom like, oh, he Yeah, no one's around. And he's very theatrical. That's a passion.

Jason Connell:

And then the phone rings and sound. Who is the unknown? Caller?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, it's Well, yeah. Like you said, it's unknown on the iPhone, by the way. Yeah. worth mentioning. Oh, sure. Product placement. Probably. It's crease. Calling Terry from the end of season three. Exactly. And his exact words are, Hey, long time. And then I was so surprised to see Terry silver hangs up on John crease.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, we thought that conversation just went and you know, overdrive and they're catching up and oh, no. Denied back to the piano blank.

Sal Rodriguez:

So right away, Jason this season. This episode is telling me anyway, it's not going to be what I think flipping the script, always always.

Jason Connell:

So now we're at Miyagi dough. And Daniel and Johnny addressed the students also the end of season three, right? Episode 10. right where they left off. And so I love how Johnny's let's begin, which is the moment we've all been hanging on to for the last year. Yes. falls completely flat.

Sal Rodriguez:

flipping the script. There you go. We thought that was going to be a you know, a send off to greater things but no.

Jason Connell:

And then Daniel gets back on track and why don't you take it away with Daniel's speech?

Sal Rodriguez:

What because he says, Johnny says, let's begin and everybody all the ensembles like huh, began, what

Jason Connell:

are we supposed to be doing? Yeah.

Sal Rodriguez:

So Daniel then realized to dojos they don't know what's going on, and their leaders don't yet know what nobody knows anything. At this point. Exactly. Daniel is moved to begin an impassioned speech, responding to begin what exactly begin a new era. Many of us used to be enemies, but rivalries don't need to last forever. The ole Valley tournament is just a few months away. And this year, the stakes are higher than they've ever been. We know that Cobra Kai is going to use every dirty trick in the book. There's only one way we're going to be able to beat and then Johnny jumps in. Go ahead, please. by kicking their ass is so hard they shit themselves.

Jason Connell:

Oh my gosh, this is how it's going to work with these two. You can already tell. Oh, yeah, we think they're gonna come together and everything's gonna be symbiotic and peaceful and in one way, but it's just not going to be the case now. No,

Sal Rodriguez:

it's a rocky marriage. Yeah.

Jason Connell:

He also mentioned pre striking, inviting, which we knew from some of the stuff that Netflix released, which I still love pre striking is great. Yeah. And so these two styles just may not mix. Well. Daniel wants like warm ups, breathing exercises, which I like. So I like that in my karate, or even just in my peacefulness, but Johnny wants sparring and fighting, which I also like, these two systems work but they're not letting the other one influence the other and it's just kind of bumping heads and my way or the highway. Little tip to Roadhouse there.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yes. No, you gotta you gotta take the good from here to get from there. Everybody has something to offer if you're willing.

Jason Connell:

And so I don't think Johnny gets the point of cleaning cars wax on wax off. He's got those kids rummaging through taking beer cans out. He's missing the point that Daniels doing with the old classic cars.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh, yeah. And speaking of the cars One thing I've long thought in the Karate Kid universe is those cars are so beautiful. They're at Miyagi his house. And now the Miyagi dough dojo. They're obsessed with keeping them clean, obviously with the whole wax on wax off. And yet you think by this time, they would be cemented concrete. Yeah, well, hey, how about covered to

Jason Connell:

our covered or I'm thinking that should be in a garage somewhere in a museum somewhere, but that's a whole other thing. I bought

Sal Rodriguez:

a carport, any protection, there is zero protection for these old beautiful cars. But I'm loving the red dirt because it is at least reminiscent of Sedona Red Rock dirt. There you go. So it kind of reminded me of that, but otherwise, I'm thinking we have cement that ground already, please.

Jason Connell:

And then I love this rudimentary obstacle course. Oh, yeah. You know you're putting your head on the baseball bat kids are getting really sick to their stomach as Chris does and vomits in the boat.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh, yeah. And that's the boat that Daniel and Miyagi have been out fishing on

Jason Connell:

balancing Sam and him went out as well. And yeah, but he always been

Sal Rodriguez:

a boat. I mean, you're outside in the yard. Why would you throw

Jason Connell:

him on people to see him? I guess. Okay, I guess it's a projectile

Sal Rodriguez:

that game is that like a drunk party game where you where you spin around with a baseball bat? Exactly. Okay,

Jason Connell:

so now we're at Cobra, Kai and Tori hits a human punching bag with flashbacks of Sam and she calls out a All the Cobra Kai's and then who enter Sal.

Sal Rodriguez:

Robbie enters as she was chewing out Kyler Oh, yeah. And others. Yeah. Well, Tori, her exact lines. If you had handled your business we would have won that fight referring to the home invasion in Encino. Yes. And of course switch sides. There you go. That'd be Yeah, that's his excuse. Hey, hawks, which sides and the Batory comes back with Miguel just got out of a wheelchair and he's still kicked your ass. Ooh, yeah. increases over hearing. Oh, yeah, this from inside bio. I just want to mention that beautiful gi that Chris is wearing. Have we seen that one before? It's black. It's long sleeve. It has a patch on it.

Jason Connell:

It comes on every now and again. I thought he had it in the last episode of season three, but I've seen it before. Very cool.

Sal Rodriguez:

I like that. Very cool.

Jason Connell:

And speaking of gear, Robbie's coming in with the vans jacket, boss. Yes. I've seen some vans throughout the show this season. So I mean, vans is definitely a sponsor. But Sal, he's not joining Cobra Kai. He's still just crashing in the back.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, even color motors that food doesn't even fight and he gets to stay here. Cutters, always talking jazz.

Jason Connell:

And then Chris goes to talk to Robbie in the back room. Yeah. And he basically, while he's doing what Chris does, so you're not a pawn. I see you as a king. Johnny chose Diaz, I mean, all the little things you gotta throw out there at Robbie, just to kinda give him a little bit of dissent. And really, man, that's what Chris is up to.

Sal Rodriguez:

What he does is he puts little thoughts in your head yeah. And then you can then go to town yourself, but he just puts those little things and he does this later. I'll put that out again. He puts those little things to make you question your own identity.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, he's very good at it. So now we're at the Russos home and so their alarm doesn't allow for much of an entry time I gotta say I mean you open the door and the alarms going off usually have like a 32nd lead time to come in and plug in the numbers but now it's immediate

Sal Rodriguez:

but why is the alarm going off? Don't Sam and Daniel have the code for this thing?

Jason Connell:

Yeah, but I'm just saying to open the door and just you have usually a second to disarm it but they got nothing you open that door and yeah, and then we learn to the password is Do you remember?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yes, outlander, which is interesting. You think that was an homage to something?

Jason Connell:

Well, there is a UK TV series name Outlander. Is that something that Amanda's into? I'm not sure. That Highlander. It's Outlander. Like I've never watched the show, but it is a series.

Sal Rodriguez:

Okay. Okay. And then how about I

Jason Connell:

know you go and Hello, Anthony. He mean, the tall guy.

Sal Rodriguez:

I cannot believe he has grown more from season three to four than I've grown in the last 20 years. I think.

Jason Connell:

Since we talked to Anthony, he's grown. I mean, while I was talking to Anthony, he must have been growing. It's ridiculous and a long time coming. We knew it was gonna happen that because we saw a photo of him and the photos that were released by Netflix, however, here he is. And well, back to the alarm real quickly. It is post home invasion. So I get the alarm cell. I just don't get why it's set to zero entry time. And speaking of alarms, do you have an alarm? Oh, yeah.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. Okay. I have a the door contacts and the window contacts. Yeah, but the sensors but like Anthony says, you should have sprung for the one with the facial recognition.

Jason Connell:

Do you have that one? No. I don't have that one. I've simply say love it. And ring. cameras everywhere. And I get Amanda's on edge. And she didn't go to the police can't go to the police. It'll have an impact on the roof. So Otto could have an impact on just the Russos themselves. But yeah, so great to see Anthony. We'll talk more about him later because I don't want to No spoilers for you. No spoilers for you.

Sal Rodriguez:

I liked the scene a lot. Jason. You know why? Because a great scene. This is a side of Amanda right here. Yep. A credit to her as an actress. Great. We really this is her just kind of at a loss at this time. You know, her first words are I'm trapped.

Jason Connell:

Yeah. vulnerable. Yes, very

Sal Rodriguez:

much. So.

Jason Connell:

I do love that. She mentioned Captain Eagle Claw. Not get all Captain Eagle Claw over there. But Daniel, he's confident that him and Johnny can read the Valley of Cobra Kai. So I would almost say a little too confident.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, he says that when Cobra Kai loses, which they will everyone will see the Cobra Kai doesn't work anymore. Especially Robbie. He's he made it made a point to say especially Robbie and Sam overhears this. Oh, he also refers to Sam as La Russo. 2.0.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, 2.0 interesting. But I'm telling you from sports from anything. Don't go and overconfident. Don't underestimate your opponent ever overestimate them do not under You can't talk like

Sal Rodriguez:

that. Yeah, no, but believe me, you know, I'm a big UFC and MMA fan and yeah, I've seen many times where people underestimated their opponent didn't take it. Seriously. We're practically giggling into the ring or into the octagon. Yeah, do not do that. Do not do that.

Jason Connell:

Mike Tyson fighting Buster Douglas about it. No way I can. Oh, and there's a new champion. So now we're at Johnny's apartment and this is hilarious how he is cooking dinner authentic chili style. And he's got the Ralph spicy mango salsa. They have the coke and the RC Cola. And he's cooking for Carmen, Miguel and Rosa.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, it's a sweet gesture. It's very nice to hear there's in the background Spanish guitar is playing as they're seated fajitas the whole bit, it actually did look pretty meaty. It was really me. I was like, Ooh, that looks pretty good. I'll have some of that. But they said, Yeah, he wanted to be authentic. And then the grandma says, authentic for who were Ecuadorian, not Mexican. Exactly. Was that the implication is that Johnny was thinking, I'm assuming a traditional Mexican meal to traditional Mexican people. Is that what he was thinking?

Jason Connell:

I don't think he knows the difference.

Sal Rodriguez:

I know. I've seen this before. You know what I'd love to say John is the only one in the world who just puts all Latin America together, but he's definitely not.

Jason Connell:

No. And then roasted jokes about one on one sparring with Sam. I mean, she's funny sound she's pretty hip. Rosa is one hip, grandma. She is

Sal Rodriguez:

she's not smoking weed in this episode, though. No, but she may have done it earlier. Yeah, exactly. That's what she's cracking jokes. She

Jason Connell:

had the munchies and she's like, I'll join you for this authentic dinner. And then Miguel begins to this is great. overshare about Ali, the the love of his life, the one that got away, and you could just see Johnny's like shot, so he would kick him out of the table and reach him

Sal Rodriguez:

very apropos for the meal itself. Miguel spills the beans.

Jason Connell:

Well done. Yes.

Sal Rodriguez:

Miguel doesn't know about Johnny and Carmen right now he does not he's in the dark. No, he

Jason Connell:

doesn't know he thinks this this dinner conversation is good for Johnny, my sensei. Oh, yeah. He has no idea that all the signs are there. But he's not picking up on though.

Sal Rodriguez:

And Carmen is sitting there having to, you know, not react much Right? Or act like a friend would react. Oh, that's cool. You know, but no, no.

Jason Connell:

Wow. This leads to them doing the dishes. And then Carmen wants to do what?

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, Johnny tries to defend it. Oh, it's not like that. We're just old friends catching up. But she tells him we should give it some time and playing basically backup. Kind of backup from each other. She's backing up a little bit from the relationship. Take it slow. Yeah. So she leaves in John's left. Johnny's left there. Doing the rest of the dishes throwing the sponge. Matt throws a sponge.

Jason Connell:

Sal, have you ever taken it slow? Oh, yeah.

Sal Rodriguez:

I've been around the block mainly in my teens and 20s. Believe me, I'm not even talking about my 30s and 40s. But they the teens and 20s were pretty rich and yeah, I went all over the place with with girlfriends and yeah, then them dove in may meet up and then then back in me back in. There was a whole lot of that whole lot too much.

Jason Connell:

Rinse and repeat. So now we're at Terry Silver's home. And of course there's a sign private property, no trespassing. So naturally crease arrives and trespasses, I assume because he just comes around the gate. And what happened?

Sal Rodriguez:

So Jason, I just want to be absolutely clear for you and I everybody listening? We don't officially the viewer doesn't officially know that this is Terry silver yet. Not officially, we can get all the fans that are guessing. And all the fans already know. Fair

Jason Connell:

enough. Wink wink when we saw him in his robe. But you're right. No, we

Sal Rodriguez:

didn't. Hang on. We only saw him from the back, though. I

Jason Connell:

mean, we saw him from the back. Yes, Rob, it's Mike Barnes, it could have been a new care.

Sal Rodriguez:

What I mean is, you know, you and I often speak we have to for the fans, right. But the new person just walking into the show, just see some guy playing on a piano who's not identified. So we officially have not identified Terry silver.

Jason Connell:

That's a good point. We probably should have pointed that out on the earlier scene, but it's true. And for those of you out there who have not seen the Karate Kid, Part Three, sell and I highly recommend you do so now stop and go watch that because this character, Terry Silva, who is a menace to society, yeah. And this may or may not be his house, and that may or may not have been him playing the piano. But what happens as crease arrives at this house,

Sal Rodriguez:

well crease walking up towards the back area. And then there's like some sort of waitress a server type drops something a man comes over. And that's when she says to him because he helps her. She says Thank you, Mr. Silva. And that's when you go, Ah, ha, of course, like we didn't know but that's when it's your right for the new viewer. You're right. That's what it's official. And that's when Terry Silva and John crease, face to face. Wow. I paused on that moment.

Jason Connell:

First time since all Valley, back in the day when they lost to Daniel Russo with Mike Barnes. They probably haven't seen each other since that day.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, because there's some things spoken later on when they're on the balcony. We'll get into that as far as like, it seems like save that. Yeah, yeah. So so there was some things that happened, which we don't really know about yet.

Jason Connell:

And Terry looks great. He's all dressed up. Now. We know that was also him in a robe. So he's got a great house still got money like he didn't cry. But then someone comes up and they call him something else out.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. A lovely woman calls him Terrence. Cheyenne. Yeah, Cheyenne calls them terrorists. And Chris asked, Oh, is this your wife? And she says, they're just enjoying the journey for now. Yeah. Okay. Have you heard of that word journey before?

Jason Connell:

Is that short for journey?

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm assuming I'm assuming.

Jason Connell:

I don't know. I'm not that hip now. So yeah, I don't have the journey in my in my repertoire, but she also invites crease for some a Moses. Yes. And he likes that. He wants a few.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yes. So Cheyenne takes crease into this party. They're having like a pool party there. Yeah, a lot of people. Yeah. And silver just stands there.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, here comes a blast from the past.

Sal Rodriguez:

I like seeing silver right there because crease Yeah, it's one of these things where you're not rooting for crease or silver. But if you have to in that moment, I'm going to root for crease in that little moment.

Jason Connell:

Because he's uncomfortable. And we want to see silver beyond comfort. I

Sal Rodriguez:

would love to see silver uncomfortable. Absolutely.

Jason Connell:

So now we're at Miyagi dough, and Daniel and Gianni have decided to divide the dojo. And so that didn't take very long.

Sal Rodriguez:

No no right away. Eagle Fang is going to train in the front Miyagi dough is going to train in the back. It's sort of like a separate but equal thing. You know, it's like you guys over there you guys. Yes, we're together. Yes, we're a team of one but you over there that's over here.

Jason Connell:

And then led by Sweep the leg Johnny, which is at American rock group. Either way. He goes into Lake sweeping Hawk as a practice dummy for everyone to take him down because hawks so new to Eagle Fang, he must pay the price. You caught that music? No, it wasn't the music. I was just referencing because it goes Sweep the leg now. No, no. That music was maybe a score. It wasn't this band. I just wanted to infuse it into the scene.

Sal Rodriguez:

Okay, so yeah, so Johnny tells the whole class they're going to practice their friend sweeps on hawk. Yeah. Even says penis breath here.

Jason Connell:

Man. One fronts we heard so he's taken him just everybody. Okay, and Europe and Europe. Yeah, poor hawk.

Sal Rodriguez:

I did feel bad for ALC right there.

Jason Connell:

So we're going back and forth a lot too, because we're seeing Miyagi dough training. Now we're back at Cobra Kai and Robbie's lifting weights still not part of the dojo just live in shacking up in the back and now they got these weights back there. So I guess it's a full gym with sleeping quarters. Yes. And then Tory comes in wearing vans mind you,

Sal Rodriguez:

oh, I didn't notice. And what happens? Well, I just want to say one thing. You know, Jason, I was a personal trainer for many years when I see that benchpress I know how much weight that is they Olympic barbells 45 pounds each plates 45. That's 135 pounds. That is 135 that Robbie is benching there. My first question was, oh, how many reps I want to know how many reps he did. But I say Robbie is probably the most muscular of our players. Sure. When he got off the bench. He had a he was all swole his shoulders looking good. And yeah, Tory comes in. And basically he scolds her for breaking into the LORUSSO house. Yeah, yeah, home invasion. And he tells her that she's lucky that they didn't call the police. Yeah, everybody's lucky at this point that the police are not involved in this.

Jason Connell:

Tell me about it. But he also hears it from her and she challenged herself. You know, if you're gonna play defense, you're in the wrong dojo, just a little bit of that crazy stuff. That's kind of you know, rubbing off on her.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, you get people to question their motives questions. They're questioning their manhood or womanhood if that's the case. Yeah, yeah. There you go question your identity. And then you plant that seed, you walk off and that person is there stewing in that thought,

Jason Connell:

well, he has no home. He's just has a place to crash and he's left Miyagi dough. He's not really part of Cobra Kai. So yeah, Robbie's descent, his mother's getting better. We hope he's probably at that rehab still. So Robbie is just, you know, just floundering

Sal Rodriguez:

rudderless. Wait, is Robbie's mother still in the rehab? Well, we

Jason Connell:

don't know. We don't know. But she was in a good place.

Sal Rodriguez:

But where did we leave off with her? I thought she was still there. Okay, I could have sworn she got out but I don't remember.

Jason Connell:

So now we're back at Silver. So we know it's silver soundness. Yes. Now officially, yes. Beautiful luxury cars out front.

Sal Rodriguez:

Of course stuff. Jason. Yeah, I knew you're gonna be ready for this. Identify the cars.

Jason Connell:

Well, I knew there was a Ferrari. Yes. And a Mercedes. Yes.

Sal Rodriguez:

And did you get the little car in the middle? What was the one in the middle? The one in the middle is a significant one. The one in the middle is a Shelby Cobra.

Jason Connell:

Oh gosh. Beautiful place. Oh, great. Play that car. Well, yeah, that was the best looking one and I didn't recognize it off that glance look,

Sal Rodriguez:

because you know, I'm a toy collector. I've got about 30 Shelby Cobra Hot Wheels. So that's how I knew from Toy collecting.

Jason Connell:

So the party continues you know this thing that Chris has stumbled into. And South crease doesn't care for totally organic vegan tofu skewers

Sal Rodriguez:

turn up and I'm sure I wasn't the only one that was having flashbacks to the vegan Mung Dal bowl

Jason Connell:

pally and Johnny had Yes, yeah, cuz this was a I didn't have a ordered and then got hammered.

Sal Rodriguez:

And then he changed. Yeah, this is a vegan tofu skewer also have the option of cilantro. Cashew sauce.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, well, he didn't get that far. He was not hungry all the sudden. Give me more of those Mimosa I'll take some more of those. And South Cheyenne finally learns about Silver's military background. That's odd.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. He never mentioned in any tour. And by the way, I wanted to definitely hit this point is that they're not just veterans. They're not just

Jason Connell:

copy. Oh, W's Hello? Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

I swear I think I'd be leading with that everywhere I went, you know, but yeah, he says he never told anything to Cheyenne. But Chris did mention Yes. Army Special Forces, and they've known each other for 50 years. Yeah, that's, that's a long time. How long have we known each other 15 years? Since oh, five. Okay, so there's that roughly 15 years my math is off. Well, now that's a little bit more than is it? 7070 years. Okay. So that's how long we know. One day it'll be 50 years.

Jason Connell:

I was there so So then a party guest is taken aback by creases Habsburg jaw line. Which forced me to look that up unless and I have something to share. But did you know what that was sell an idea, but I never heard it called that.

Sal Rodriguez:

No. And you know what's funny is this is so something my mother would say. My my mother would totally set a party. That totally to to some stranger. She comment on someone's cleft chin or what? Or whatever collection?

Jason Connell:

That's what I was expecting. Yeah, he definitely has that pronounced chin. Well, let me tell you what I found out. Yes, I had to look it up. Many of the kings and queens of Spanish Habsburg dynasty, which ruled across Europe from the 16th, to the start of the 18th century, had elongated jaw that later became known as the Habsburg jaw. Well, studies suggest this facial feature was likely the result of centuries of inbreeding.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, interesting tie up at the end, because the question then becomes how they get sort of a backhanded compliment, maybe, right? Because you're commenting on somebody, right? birth defect from inbreeding, essentially.

Jason Connell:

And so what was this guest trying to say so?

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, I don't know. I kind of got the feeling he was being a little flirtatious.

Jason Connell:

No, I know. He didn't know the story of inbreeding. And that's not what he was implying. Yeah, no, he was just meant a strong job, basically. But you know, might resist the urge to comment on someone's Habsburg jawline in the future. Just say, Oh, I like your jawline there. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

yeah. He would say hey, you got a great jawline. I mean, it's a strange thing to say to another guy, but Okay, fine. You have a strong jawline. Thanks. You know,

Jason Connell:

Ron Perlman has one of those to Mickey Rourke. It just looks like fake. I'm

Sal Rodriguez:

very pronounced. And by the way, just to be clear, I'm not ragging on anybody with a jaw line, because I wish I had one. Yeah, I wish I had a jaw line. I wish I had, you know, a nice big strong jaw. But I do not. By the way, the masks have been my friend the last year and a half just to let you know, they might think I have a Hedberg jawline, under the mask, you know.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, exactly. So we learn Cheyenne has a mindfulness

Sal Rodriguez:

app. That was hilarious.

Jason Connell:

Like, there's like calm and there's these other ones. I love that. So now yeah, of course, she has a mindfulness app. And she thinks Cobra Kai is called the Vipers. Wow. So he's talked about that, but not his time. And yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm surprised he's even talked about that. Obviously, he keeps things from this woman. They're not married. I don't know if that's so relevant in the churn? Yeah, there. He doesn't, I guess share much. I guess there's this whole side of Terry silver. He doesn't share with people obviously.

Jason Connell:

Anybody even himself it looks like and then curious like what he had to say because I'm in the martial arts he site. Karate is not a face because that guest chimes in, like the same guy that complimented his line was like jaw line. I was like, Oh, I didn't know you're part of karate, you know, making fun of it. That is adorable. Yeah, that's adorable. So great. Karate is not a phase. I'm here to say that's absolutely true.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. Because I think this is a big line right here. Chris says, you can leave it for a while, but it never really leaves you.

Jason Connell:

Yeah. And Terry's taking that. I'll be calm. Silver. Silver is taken in line. Yeah, very introspective. And speaking of mindfulness, we cut to me aikido dojo, and Daniel leads meditation. While Johnny does what exactly?

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, they're trying to have a meditation inside of this building here. The inner dojo, I guess, right. Yeah. The inside you have the whole dojo. You have the outside the inside is that.

Jason Connell:

Okay, so there's Miyagi dough, and they got those rules inside. You know, this is more delicate. Okay. It

Sal Rodriguez:

is indeed the actual heart of the dojo then. It's not just the area outside. Okay, so they're in the heart of the dojo, trying to have a mindfulness. Did they have the app? I wonder?

Jason Connell:

Yeah, they had they had giants app.

Sal Rodriguez:

So they're doing a meditation trying to focus right? And Johnny is yelling stuff outside at the eagle fan crowd. stop wanting like a little bitch. Don't be a pussy, punch him in the face. So he's out there yelling and then some of the Miyagi those students. I think it was what Chris starts cracking up. They can contain themselves where they're trying to meditate and they're trying to you Hear this

Jason Connell:

it's hard to focus anyway. So let alone Johnny out there right and Raven, come on. Punch him in the balls. What the hell's wrong with you? Yeah, like you couldn't last two seconds with that.

Sal Rodriguez:

So Daniel gets fed up though and he walks Exactly. Yeah, cuz he's got to quiet down. Yeah, he tries to bring some order anyway. And while that happens,

Jason Connell:

Hawk takes a break from the legs sweeping. So Johnny and Daniel, he loves taking a break from the leg sweeping. And he goes into another area of Miyagi, though there's so many rooms you know, there used to have a bedroom here so we just it's like a you know, it's the house that they used. They use it differently. Yes, yes. Well, you watch cardio kids very recently where Terry silver hides in the fireplace and there's all those rooms and those silent doors open, you know, looks like a Peter Sutera video.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh, everywhere glory of love. So you have the house and then certain segments dedicated to different things. I got it. No. Okay,

Jason Connell:

so then Hawk discovers a Miyagi scroll of the ancient sparring deck. Yeah. But what happens as he takes us in and Dimitri in hammer having a moment because they're rebond. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

Dimitri is explaining the history, right? The lineage of Miyagi dough reflected in this scroll here. And then Hawk starts to kind of touch it. And then Chris walks by. Hey, you be careful with that. You already broke a door because earlier? Oh, yeah. Hot foot goes through the Japanese sliding doors that have the paper. Yeah, so his foot goes, goes through that. So it says you already broke a door. Oh, and then here's where this was a a deep one. And you stole Mr. Miyagi is metal. Oh, interesting. Interesting thing to bring up again. And then Nathaniel walks up. Yeah, right next to Chris. And he says, You beat the shit out of me. Yeah, bro. Sorry about that. Yeah. And Chris tells hawk. You're not wanted here. Yeah, so

Jason Connell:

here's hawk. He's brand new to Eagle dough. Miyagi dough, all of that. Eagle dough. Listen to me go Fang. I'm trying to combine him right now. And then he goes outside. And he kind of shares this with Daniel, who is already upset with Johnny. Yes. And he's so short with him and dismisses him. And do you have what he says?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, yeah. Because Hawk says that, Daniel. I don't know if I fit in here. Yeah, and Daniel comes back quick. What what did you expect? You burn bridges with pretty much everyone here.

Jason Connell:

Yeah. Ooh, not what you say Daniel on that. Mom. You're the adult. You're the sensei one up to Yeah, that's him reacting because he's just frustrated with Johnny. And of course hawks gone. Yeah, that's all he needs. He doesn't even really need this stuff right now. So now we're at Johnny's apartment parking lot. And he says to Miguel, the only thing Larousse and I have in common is hating crease. Now, so I'd argue that point, because they both care about Robbie. Yes. They both care about Ali for that matter. Yes. Not to mention karate headbands, and the 80s so they're a lot more alike than maybe Johnny wants to admit. But on cue Miguel speaks Johnny's language and says why?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, all of a sudden this through I was not expecting this. Miguel blurts out what about rocky three and then we hear that bell ding that ring Bell Gosh. And Miguel creates this analogy with Rocky Apollo Clubber Lang, and reaching out, kind of encouraging Johnny to reach out to Daniel. But Johnny says, Why can't Daniel be Apollo? And then Miguel says striking first is more badass. So Miguel is an interesting moment here because Miguel is learning how to speak Johnny's language to influence johnny johnny ease, Johnny he's to actually influence John.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, well, he's he's sharp. Miguel is very sharp. And yeah, I mean, listen, you're not just speaking Johnny's language. You're speaking my life in Rocky three. I was like, I sat up on the couch like, oh my gosh, they're going there. Their show runners just know how to do it. They're fanboys to sell. Obviously. Yeah, I love the reference. In that movie. For those who don't know, spoiler alert. Rocky's on top of the mountain top Clubber Lang beats him he's got he's got the eye of the tiger Clubber Lang right up and comer wants to beat the champ. Rockies down in the pits, goes to his ex foe, rival Apollo Creed. Our Apollo comes to him I should say, and brings him back dust him off trains him in some of the greatest training scenes until rocky four gets him back on top beats Clubber Lang and he's rocky again and also rocky lost his manager Mickey was killed and you know walk you through I have not happened three in a long time. It's time so time at your homework

Sal Rodriguez:

because we just revisited rocky four because the new director's cut by Sylvester Stallone that was released. We did a special episode and let's talk Cobra Kai all about rocking for so our listeners. Be sure to check that out and you see the intertwining cross pollination of Rocky and Karate Kid.

Jason Connell:

Yes indeed. So now Miguel call Sam, who drives her high end, convertible Mercedes self interest In car for a price tag, yeah, I've tried to put a price tag on

Sal Rodriguez:

that. And she's in high school right?

Jason Connell:

Of course she's but they do on a dealership. So it could just be dealers plates, you know, we don't know. But still, that's a beautiful card. She had either this car or something similar when she drove Robbie to that party back in one of the seasons before.

Sal Rodriguez:

It wasn't a convertible. I think that cars probably 135 Easy. Wow, that's

Jason Connell:

higher than I was thinking so, but they recap their plan to keep the dojos together. Like they're both working on their sensei. Right? Sam sensei is also her father. And then there's Johnny, who's also like a role model, father figure and his Sensei, but they hang up. And that puts Sam where exactly because now we see that she's not at home. She's not driving around. She went somewhere on a plan.

Sal Rodriguez:

interesting moment that as she hangs up with Miguel, she's pulling up to a skate park to try to connect with Robbie. Yes, you cannot hook up mine, Jonah? No, not No, no, just just reach out to him, you know, reach out, Hey, how are you? And she lets Robbie know that she cares about him, you know, and, and he's hauled all caught up and while you throw me over for Miguel, and she's like, Well, okay, that may be but I care about you. That doesn't change that. Yeah.

Jason Connell:

So I'd say Robbie, first of all, he's been recruited by everybody. Everybody been just the two dojos. Well, I guess it's two and a half three. But he's really a man without a country.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. But he's wanted. He's a wanted man.

Jason Connell:

Wanted never bad place to be to be wanted. But he's trying to clear his head back at the old skate park, which we've seen Robbie here before. Yes, a few times. He did that.

Sal Rodriguez:

Remember that signature hand clap? Yeah, yeah, it was great. But But he tells Sam, he says you're not getting what you want.

Jason Connell:

Or she says that's all I want. And when she said that's how Ivan said she should have said, that's what you should want. But she said I and he threw up right back.

Sal Rodriguez:

Because why should he care what she wants? Right? Yeah,

Jason Connell:

boom, it blew up. So now we're back at Silver's home and crease and silver taken the view which sounds stunning. If you've been to Malibu or if this is Malibu adjacent or somewhere it's definitely not shot in Atlanta. I'll tell you that. Yeah, I

Sal Rodriguez:

was gonna say that we have not been officially notified that this is indeed Malibu but I would say it looks like Malibu Yeah, definitely looks like not all the times that I've been there. This is what it looks like. Well, look we just covered on Let's Talk movies. What was the movie? Hello, American Gigolo has a house in Malibu?

Jason Connell:

Very recently for sale. So yeah, very, very similar. Yeah. And crease lays it out. You know why they started Cobra Kai? To what they came back from the war and they were mistreated and people need to wake up, right? They had a NATO mission.

Sal Rodriguez:

Okay, how about this way his line was went through hell, watching our friends die, only to be welcomed home by a bunch of hippies calling us killers. Were you not reminded of the Sylvester Stallone first bloods speech when Colonel Troutman comes in?

Jason Connell:

You said that speech is said by what? By actors. Oh, man, I

Sal Rodriguez:

know scene. There was a time when I knew so many actors that did that monologue with I almost thought he was going to go there and say draw the line there. Yeah, I thought he was gonna go even further but he kind of ended there. But yeah, that reminded me of that. But he's he basically is trying to recruit Terry silver to quote finish what they started.

Jason Connell:

Silver should have said, Okay, Rambo. Just this little Rambo in there. And then he says, how only Daniel and Johnny stand in the way. Yeah, right. And this is news to silver. He's like, hold on, hold on. Yeah, little Daniel boy, the one that you know, we harassed and all that stuff, too. And your championships, he's only heard of him. And maybe they met you know, one day he could have popped by the dojo. We don't know. We never saw that. Although, I want to know what happens later. So that's probably not the case. But I'm not gonna get into things but you know, that could happen. Terry was kind of around and and out back then. Of course, he was making buku dollars as well. But basically sell silver just straight up says.

Sal Rodriguez:

He says back in the 80s I was so hopped up on cocaine, and revenge. I was very surprised that they take okay be

Jason Connell:

lievable Yeah, because they're out there. Like I never saw him doing

Sal Rodriguez:

that behavior. Now don't make sense. Yeah. That's spot

Jason Connell:

on. Yes. You know,

Sal Rodriguez:

yeah, yeah. To be clear in Karate Kid three. There is no cocaine reference. And yet here he says he was on cocaine. And then when you go back you go Oh, yeah. Okay, now I see it. Yeah, he was also there also intercutting

Jason Connell:

scenes from Karate Kid part three. Yeah, we seem crazy. He was he here's

Sal Rodriguez:

a little glimpse, but But hang on. I noticed he doesn't have a butler anymore. Where's

Jason Connell:

the crew? Yes, all those people when he takes a bath, they're all just waiting to take notes.

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, I think later on we're gonna see he is the crew. Yeah, right.

Jason Connell:

So he also mentions how he was bullying a teenager. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

he regrets it.

Jason Connell:

He regrets it and I liked that side. He's had time to grow how losing all Valley and card Get Part Three spoiler alert, he hit rock bottom but so before I get into that I was also gonna say that silver basically said no decrease Yeah, he said no he's just like okay yeah yeah are you in? No and then he goes on to share you know these revelations are like well

Sal Rodriguez:

one was a dig big time and we even see creases reaction. This is after the all Valley and karate get three. Yes. Right when he says turns out you disappearing was the best thing that ever happened to

Jason Connell:

ya creases like oh, I didn't see that come in the nose. One thing, it's another to be thrown under the bus. And you could tell I mean, he was on top before but he was all over the place. Terry was he acted so much like he was on coke. He's high. He's low. He's high. He's kicking people in his house. He's sparring with anything he wanted the world was my oyster. Now he's more while he's dating Cheyenne. She's got a mindfulness app. Yeah, he's more centered.

Sal Rodriguez:

I don't know if he's taking TRT but he may have low tea. And if he's not taking TRT he has low teas. It's what happens to all of us guys eventually, you know, you chill out.

Jason Connell:

Right? And then Sal I gotta say as this scene ends crease thanks Cheyenne for the tofu but probably should have thanked her for them a Moses. Yeah, not sure what that was.

Sal Rodriguez:

That would have been good. I think the tofu was meant to be more of a dig. You know, like tofu is more comedy. I guess. So then the Mimosa Mimosa is kind of funny, too. You know there. Yeah. Yes. All about those. Yeah, he had them almost didn't like the tofu but yeah, that was a little dig right there. In other words, yeah, you go back to your vegan lifestyle on the beach. I'm gonna go fight because he says he this is where he challenges him. He says guys, our age are supposed to pack it up and ride off into the sunset. That may work for you. But I still have some fight left in me. So this is where he's challenging planting that seed in Terry Silver's at challenging Terry Silver's manhood right here and then walking off yeah,

Jason Connell:

I'm out. So now we're at Johnny's apartment and Johnny practices and apology to Daniel to be Apollo Creed from Rocky three. And guess who's at the door?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, this I was surprised well first of all go by knew right away. I got a CG Okay, look,

Jason Connell:

let's go back immediately as I of course, Stan. Okay, let's

Sal Rodriguez:

get back to the home security systems for a second. What is this just opening up your door? You hear a knock you just open it especially off think about after all they've been through here and knock you just open it? Who does that? And you

Jason Connell:

can't just use this.

Sal Rodriguez:

How about that?

Jason Connell:

Now do Poppins we do Poppins on Cobra Kai. That's what we do.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, I just don't get why people just open doors. But anyway, he opens up the door. It's Daniel coming to make amends. And with a six course banquet.

Jason Connell:

Nice, so good. He comes in and Johnny loves the gesture. And as you know a sign of appreciation offers him wet ham. Oh, yeah. Delicious. Some good old wet hand dripping you're missing out. Let me just get some of this myself. So good. But Sal, what happens next?

Sal Rodriguez:

Okay, interesting moment. Daniel officially. And interesting place to happen. Over course,

Jason Connell:

this is cards here. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

he says you should officially join Miyagi dough. So he wants to just you know, bring Eagle Fang into the fold of Miyagi. They'll just have an Obi Wan which I think makes so we

Jason Connell:

talked about this too. If one was gonna go Eagle fan has been around for five seconds, which we're about to talk about more. And I assumed this much like okay, Eagle fan will just kind of morph into Miyagi dough with Sensei, Lauren's having to say sure, but no, they're holding their ground. It's principles. It's ego. And these two are quite here. Right? But it goes on to Daniel's saying what? Which I thought this speech isn't really a speech. It's a couple sentences, but was really good and funny.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. Well, because Daniel says, join me Agudo. And Johnny says, Why should I join your dojo? Maybe you should join Eagle Fang. And I don't even know if Johnny took that serious statement, right? Yeah, but then Dan has come on, Johnny. Miyagi dough has a rich tradition going back hundreds of years. You started your dojo what three weeks ago at a park? I'm pretty sure you came up with the name from this poster. And then he refers to a poster. Oh, it's like an eagle.

Jason Connell:

Flash. It's always been there. By the way.

Sal Rodriguez:

It's like something maybe you'd want at a carnival if you you know, yeah, get the top prize and like a top prize at a at a midway game, I would imagine.

Jason Connell:

Yeah. I remember seeing that when he was talking about iron Eagle early on series. It was there. So really funny. Daniel also mentions the stolen minivan.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yes. The 1993 Dodge Caravan. Yeah.

Jason Connell:

And I love how Johnny quickly to flex it like wow, the radios busted the trunk smells like pasties immediately. Yeah, I may have just commandeered that thing, but it's it's terrible. Yeah, it's

Sal Rodriguez:

almost like I did you a favor by taking Yeah, you

Jason Connell:

owe me pay me to take it away. But they can't find common. Yes. And the dojos they're separating?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah. So they both agree to tell the kids tomorrow. The news that eagle Fang and Miyagi dough are going their separate ways, I guess.

Jason Connell:

Yeah. So now we're at Miyagi dough. The next day, and Sam's in The classic car from the Karate Kid and that is

Sal Rodriguez:

the 1948 Ford Super Deluxe. Same car used in Greece. Well, not okay, a little different, a little different.

Jason Connell:

Similar try to get don't try to throw that at our listeners or viewers.

Sal Rodriguez:

Go back to our Karate Kid analysis episode and we will talk about the relationship with the also back to the future as well. Maybe Back to the Future to you'll talk about I want to hear about that. But that's the 1948 Ford Super Deluxe car beautiful car.

Jason Connell:

Sam's in the backseat tops down. Yeah, and Sam's in the backseat and she's reflective she knows that what's happening she knows these dojos these two guys these are butting heads again. And Miguel comes over really cute sound acting like a chauffeur has a little accent just trying to you know get his girlfriend I guess we can call her his girlfriend again. I guess we can say that Sure. Or they're sweet on each other. And they're having a moment really cute. And then Hawk arrives with what

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, Hawk walks by their field of vision right in front of the car, walking very quickly with a sledgehammer it's one thing for some anybody to be walking by with a sledgehammer is one thing for a hawk to be walking by with a sledgehammer so you know that's something I almost knocked over my drink thinking about Hawk with nervous well

Jason Connell:

his history there wasn't good. He was the one that led them there to deface. Miyagi dough Dojo

Sal Rodriguez:

are we also led to believe that it was maybe officially him the through that small child through the kitchen window. Oh, yeah,

Jason Connell:

right. Yeah, well, maybe a lot of guys did that. Kind of that too. Okay. Now we're back at Cobra Kai and Tory Kyler. And others Enter the Dojo to discover who will be

Sal Rodriguez:

leading class. Yeah, this was a surprise for all of them. They walked in, I think like they just had lunch because Kyler mentioned something about a burrito or something. Yeah. Being like a party burrito. Yeah, he's always like, cracking these jokes. Yeah, they walk up and Robbie's front and center front and center. And no crease. No, no. And right away caller says you're not even part of the team. And you think you're our sensei, and he says, Get the hell out of here, man.

Jason Connell:

Wow. So this leads to a great fighting sequence as Robbie challenges anyone to hit him in fact, so he should have said land a blow and I will go but he said something else and I think that's what a bit better. That's that's a good one. That's a good sign and they start coming at him a key plan this out methodically. I'm going to go up here I'm going to take charge and when I'm you know, challenge me because he knows this is gonna happen. He's played this out. Robbie is also very sharp, and very intuitive. And he knew what would lead to this. And so I gotta say, probably looks pretty invincible, as they come at him one at a time, sometimes two on one. And no one's getting a shot. No,

Sal Rodriguez:

no. And also we have flashbacks of Daniel teaching Robbie the wax on wax off as he's blocking punches. This Miyagi dough tray. Yeah. Unnamed Cobra Kai guy, throwing the punches. And then all of a sudden he's blocking having all these flashbacks. He's doing really great. He's besting everybody. Everyone has been bested. And finally Tory stands at the end.

Jason Connell:

Well, I was gonna say really quickly. So a younger Sal Rodriguez could have been random Cobra Kai guy.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, I could have been I would have been. I would have been.

Jason Connell:

Fernandez could have been that

Sal Rodriguez:

I would have been in the 18 did look younger category. I probably could have auditioned for a role like that. Although I'm assuming are they trying to grab people with martial arts experience? Maybe not? Yeah,

Jason Connell:

I'm not sure. I don't know. Our cast has come a long way. I gotta say, but they're the cast and they're going through tons of training. It was obvious as the season goes on, and even here,

Sal Rodriguez:

okay, can I just say one thing? Only I was gonna say this to the end. But since we're talking about martial arts in the cast, please no, Rick Umberger. I didn't see him. No, he's not in this episode. I was disappointed. Yeah, I was looking for him too, because I've become a fan of this guy.

Jason Connell:

I know a lot already know him. Mentioned now though, so I've even

Sal Rodriguez:

seen fan videos dedicated to brick and mortar. Murder. Yeah. Where are you? And I'm looking for him like, he's not there. Brick and brick has gone.

Jason Connell:

People leave people come back. It's part of Cobra coming. So during this fight, though, he pushes Tory he has his way with her. takes her down. But Sal, this is a mistake that you do not make. And the Cobra Kai dojo, and he shows a little bit of mercy. Yeah, right. Well, you

Sal Rodriguez:

can't forget also, I mean, any MMA fan knows this. When they are your opponent's on his back and you're standing in front of them. You're trying to pass their guard as they say, You got to look out for the up kick. Back up. Yes.

Jason Connell:

over any longer he probably would have put a hand down like let me help you up and she is this Tory, she kicks him square in the face. He

Sal Rodriguez:

does. But he says A deal's a deal. And he says I'm gonna go so he starts to turn and walk away. But Tory says stay.

Jason Connell:

He proved his point. He's tougher than all of them and she gotta shy him but he took care of business.

Sal Rodriguez:

I also wonder if that moment especially when she said stay just the word stays almost has an intimacy to it. This is The beginning of Robbie and Tory, I'm thinking right here. That's my guess. Well, here's

Jason Connell:

what happens and

Sal Rodriguez:

what happens episode three.

Jason Connell:

We'll talk off air. So now we're back at Miyagi dough and Daniel and Johnny arrived to address the students. But what happens?

Sal Rodriguez:

I just want to mention I'm looking more at the clothing. Daniel is wearing. He was wearing Nike before now he's wearing Ralph Lauren warmup jacket. Yeah, he's got a lot of warm up stuff going. Yeah, but I'm trying to pay a little more attention to some of the product placements, some of the clothing, but yeah, so he meets up with Johnny outside Miyagi, though they're about to go in and tell their resistance breaking up. Yeah. But then they hear a noise, right? They hear something, a scuffle. They rush over. And you see Hawk with that sledgehammer, hitting a wooden fence and your first thought is, what the hell? What is Hawk do? Yeah, but then we learn that the entire group has agreed to build the Okinawan sparring deck. And Dimitri even says, based on Eli's plans, he's used the word Eli. Oh, you haven't heard Eli in a while now based on Eli's plans. And then Dimitri gives his own approval. He said, What mathematically it makes sense. Yeah, because we forget right? Dimitri and Eli are like, nerds science with nerds. Right? Yeah, totally. I forgot about that. I mean, that in a good way. Yeah. No, it's great. I just forget about that. Because they're running around doing martial arts. Yeah.

Jason Connell:

geek out building thing, schematics. They got AutoCAD on their iPad. I got it all figured out. But so I really love this same. It's that classic case of the student or students becoming a master. You know, these two guys can't lead. They don't know how to do it. They only stuck in their own way. But wait, our students have taken things to the next level. Because you see them all. They're already working. They're not waiting for permission. They're already working together, clearing out brush, putting things in the ground, putting stakes in the ground. It's a really great moment for Miyagi dough, and Eagle Fang working together.

Sal Rodriguez:

I think because Daniel and Johnny at that moment after they already agreed to split up essentially. Yeah, at that moment. They I think they had to have realized it's not about us. Exactly. It's about them. And they're all stepping up to the plate to make it happen. They are trying to make this thing happen, where Daniel and Johnny were ready to give up because I

Jason Connell:

don't know they're stuck in their way and you need you need that. It's really beautiful. But what cracks me up Sal? I mean, that cracks me up. But what's amazing to me is the fact that Miyagi is a state still has more undeveloped land. I'm shocked. I mean, I went to Miyagi his old house that went from Karate Kid, Canoga Park. They knocked that down and put another house up. So this is amazing. Like, Oh, knock this fence down. We got more Los Angeles County.

Sal Rodriguez:

This is the San Fernando Valley. This is receita. Officially the show. It's receita. And yeah, there's not a whole lot of land anymore. Your average homes are selling for a million bucks easily. And usually being torn down then to build condos is what's happening all over the San Fernando Valley. So yeah, who knew they had some a separate acreage over there. Nobody knew about.

Jason Connell:

Love it. Just keep expanding the Miyagi dojo. I'm cool with it. So now we're back at Cobra Kai, and Robbie is leading class, right really, he looks like a sensei. Now he's already bested everybody, and they're all listening to him. And so he gives an incredibly inspiring speech, which is intercut. It's actually intercut with the Miyagi dough construction site that's going on, as well as Terry silver contemplating a potential return to let's just call it martial arts.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, well, because an interesting shot of Terry silver because he's there in his magnificent beachside home. When he's alone, he's eating a sort of a sad looking salad. You know, it's not that exciting, you know, and he's just kind of poking at it. And you know, that what Chris said to him is spinning around in his head,

Jason Connell:

when he's already got it all. So what is he missing? This guy's got it. All right, he's missing

Sal Rodriguez:

the way of the fist is what he's missing. Because, you know, I mean, you can only go to so many cocktail parties. You know, you want to kick some ass, right?

Jason Connell:

So many apps you can sponsor? Yeah. Well, this leads to that speech, and I know it's long, but it's so on point. And this is a great way to wind down Episode One, season four. And Sal, why don't you take it away?

Sal Rodriguez:

I would definitely say this episode is the rise of Robbie. Definitely this first episode, Robbie says, over at Miyagi dough. Our enemies are uniting against us. They think by working together they have the advantage. They think they're better than us. And I should know, because I used to be one of them. That officially ends today. I'll admit at first, I didn't want to join Cobra Kai. But eventually, we all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and realize who we really are. Now, we may have taken some losses, but it's not about how you start. It's about how you finish and to beat the enemy. It helps to know the enemy's playbook. So I'm going to do Teach you Miyagi dough karate, so we can beat Miyagi dough karate. Holy cow. I'm getting goosebumps. I swear to Gosh,

Jason Connell:

unbelievable. Wow. He knows the way he's like the ticket. Unbelievable. It's like when a player leaves a great team and football right before the playoffs they are here's what they do. Yeah, he's got it. All right there. Wow. It's unbelievable.

Sal Rodriguez:

I can't believe what's happening. I would have never thought something like this would have no and it's happening.

Jason Connell:

Well, while this is going on, like I said, it's intercut. Lots of things happening. Voiceover Prease. Voiceover crease arrives. And you know, immediately so very pleased to see Ravi right in line running the troops. But Sal, this leads to an incredible conclusion to the episode during Robbie speech, Cheyenne asked her parents to get a bottle of marchais from the wine

Sal Rodriguez:

cellar, very expensive bottle of wine. Yeah,

Jason Connell:

I'm assuming. Lo and behold, we come across none other than

Sal Rodriguez:

this was huge. I, I paused on this, to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. And I was seeing what I was seeing. I cannot believe I still can't believe it. No, what an interesting choice. And I'd love to hear how this all worked out. But what we see is we see boxes from came in a state Wine, wine boxes, and then is a bottle of wine on the top. A Cayman lava block 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. By the way, I looked it up at least 150 bucks for this at least I'll sure it's not their most expensive bottle of wine and there's always a larger bottle. It looks like the larger one. Okay, so hey, for the newcomer Jason, why don't we go ahead and tell our listener why this is significant. Why this bottle of wine labeled Cayman has any significance to us.

Jason Connell:

Well, this comes from Robert Mark Kaman. The writer of The Karate Kid invented all these characters. I mean, new characters on Cobra Kai shirt. No, but they spawned from the Karate Kid. We covered his whole filmography on an episode not that long ago. I highly recommend checking that out. We go scene by scene or beat by beat through his career. He was the inspiration for it. He was in a dojo very similar to Cobra Kai and then switched over to another dojo, who had a sensei that he drew the character from Mr. Miyagi from who studied in Okinawa. He was very into martial arts, and went on to write the Karate Kid Karate Kid, Part Two Karate Kid part three, not to mention other great trilogies like take him taken Trilogies or the transporter trilogy? Yes, yes, yes. And many, many other things. What he touches is gold, and south. Where does he live now?

Sal Rodriguez:

Now he lives I think in Sonoma, somewhere in Northern California. Now, Robert Mark Heyman, who by the way, is still just just to be clear, Robert Mark Heyman is still active and is currently writing the Karate Kid musical as we speak. Okay, we're going off on a tangent but the point is, Robert Mark Heyman is now a winemaker. And as Cayman wines lives on a vineyard, he lives on a vineyard. It sounds like his life is fantastic. So why not

Jason Connell:

honor him by just showing his we talked about on that episode how you and I are gonna get some caemlyn estate Why

Sal Rodriguez:

don't get set before us but Terry series

Jason Connell:

silver we own so much of it of course. But this leads to sell I think I had to stand up when I saw this I was freaking out. And Sophia is like what's going on? Because she doesn't understand Sally's gonna flip when he sees this. But this bottle is high like you said stack tie and it makes Terry silver do what

Sal Rodriguez:

he looks at it and something in in Terry switches and he delivers it was called a spinning heel kick. Is it exactly a spinning right heel kick sending the bottle smashing into a framed painting and we hear Cheyenne in the background Terence Is everything okay? And he says yeah, I'm coming and he walks out and then we see the wine I think a symbolic of blood would you say of course in other words, Terry silver is back

Jason Connell:

oh my god Wow. Believable I want to be in the writers room for that one ah, I can't pay what if we get him had a bottle of wine How about we make good came in a statewide? Yeah, let me ask Robert Mark came if he's cool with it loves the tip of the cap. wine sales have shot up this weekend. I'm gonna

Sal Rodriguez:

by the way, I just I did a pause a couple of times on him delivering that kick. It looks like thomasian Griffith delivering that kick.

Jason Connell:

Oh, yeah, it absolutely was silver in my opinion. Yeah, cuz I remember that.

Sal Rodriguez:

I wanted this stuff, man. I just want to know and you know what, I don't think anybody would be angry if it were me.

Jason Connell:

Right. No. Well, he could kick back in credit card part. I

Sal Rodriguez:

know but this kick is a little it's been a while in a while. Yeah. I used to run marathons. Jason when I was in my 20s I don't use I don't anymore.

Jason Connell:

The operative words, but also he is a very tall man. Yeah, six, four. I mean, I'm tall but he's got me beat so his long kicks look fantastic. Right. And so he does the spinning heel kick. And it is right on point. Bottle, like you said, hits the wall. Hits art. The wine comes down very symbolic of blood red wine. And that's the end of the episode. Terry Silva is back the rise of Robbie the dojos falling apart Eagle Fang Miyagi to a falling apart than learning to come together because there's so much at play. Couldn't have been a better episode one of season four.

Sal Rodriguez:

And let's not forget Carmen and Gianni agreeing to step back a little bit take some time.

Jason Connell:

Well, he only agreed because she put it

Sal Rodriguez:

out. Yeah, no, no, he was remember the end of season three when he first walked over and he was ready to express his love for her. He was gonna say I'm ready right I'm like I'm ready for love. I'm ready for a relationship whatever it is. Yeah, so no Johnny was guns a blazing but she was she heard this about ally if she hadn't heard that about ally I know who knows right?

Jason Connell:

Of course of course. Okay, but anyway mazing Episode Are you with me on that?

Sal Rodriguez:

It's fantastic. And again, top notch I loved it but nothing how I thought it would be right always flipping the script these people

Jason Connell:

what would be your IMDB rating for this episode?

Sal Rodriguez:

Definitely in the eights for sure. And the reason I give it only the eights and not the nines is because I want to give myself room to go to grow. Yes, yes. So so I'm assuming and we've noticed in previous seasons that it could start in the eights and then go up from there. Yeah,

Jason Connell:

yeah. And it doesn't matter we both love it. I'm sure the fans love it. Everyone is excited we're back baby. And just as soon as it's over and the Cobra Kai logo comes on, then come something else out very special that I know that you watched and saw. And that was what

Sal Rodriguez:

yeah, very special tribute says In Memoriam Ed Asner 1929 to 2021 and a nice picture there of Ed Asner. Very sad. Sad to see but pleased

Jason Connell:

to see knew this. We knew Yeah. did do a tribute episode Fred who did who played said Weinberg, Cobra Kai, but we were speculating. So we knew he passed away and we did the trivia in honor of him. But we didn't know if he was in the season yet because he could have filmed some episodes and then passed away. Well, now we know. Yeah. You know, he's not going to be in any episodes, unfortunately. And I love that they did this though. Yeah, very touching. Very nice.

Sal Rodriguez:

And for the newcomer Sid Weinberg was Johnny Lawrence's stepdad growing up. Now. We never met him in the Karate Kid movies. But in Cobra Kai said comes back as Johnny stepdad

Jason Connell:

No, beyond that. We never met him. And in the karate kids, but just a very nice touching send off at Asner recipes. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

the show runners do these little tributes like today with Rob garrison. And I really liked that. I do really like that a lot.

Jason Connell:

Absolutely. So that's all we got. Episode one incredible episode, you and I've talked about this before as well. As we go on, we're in season four. Now the episodes even though they're like this is a longer one while longer than some of them. But there's just more there to talk about. We're bringing all these three seasons in the movies with us. And every episode, you and I have so many talking

Sal Rodriguez:

three seasons and three movies.

Jason Connell:

I know right? And even the next credit kid, you might sprinkle it in, but not yet, probably.

Sal Rodriguez:

So there'll be some references. Sure.

Jason Connell:

So we definitely these are more in the hour range. It feels like but whatever. We're having a blast mini movies, if you will. But I cannot wait. So now for Episode Two. I can't wait for you to watch episode, because I watched it again. You're gonna watch it for the first time.

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm excited about watching the episodes. I'm excited about talking about the episodes with you. I'm looking forward to the next 10 weeks. I really am. And you know, like I always say not my words, but the secret to life. Something to do someone to love. Something to look forward to. Absolutely right. And I'm looking forward to going through season four of Cobra Kai.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, that's why people don't retire. So yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

I'm not retiring, that's for sure.

Jason Connell:

No, we love what we do. So and it's a pleasure to have you here. We make it happen. You're traveling, I'll be traveling, but we'll find the time. And we'll be banging out these episodes that come out every Wednesday. Yep, our new episodes are coming out every Wednesday, episode two, three all the way up to 10. And then we're gonna let our fans know when we're doing the YouTube live recordings. We'll give them one or two day notice because our recording schedule might be a little off because of our travel schedule. But we're going to be doing one or two a week and they can join in live. They want to do that and then they know Wednesday they get the new episode coming out. So that's our plan.

Sal Rodriguez:

Well, it's good to have you it's good of you to Do Jason you're you're letting everybody know what you're going to do and you do it.
