Welcome to Just curious media. This is let's talk Cobra Kai. I'm Jason Connell.
Sal Rodriguez:And I'm Sal Rodriguez.
Jason Connell:All right, so we are back for a really fun episode.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, interesting news. Because, you know, I'd forgotten actually, Jason, when you said you wanted to talk about this very topic. I thought, Oh, we're gonna go through the career of Martin Cove. And that's great. And that's fun. But I've completely forgotten. He's gonna be on Dancing with the Stars. Now. That's pretty exciting.
Jason Connell:Yes. And that is the name of this episode. So Martin Cove is Dancing with the Stars.
Sal Rodriguez:Wow. Wow. I am looking forward to this. I really am. Because we missed Macho. I mean, it was so long ago. Yeah, that's right. Macho was on dance with the stars in 2011.
Jason Connell:Yeah, I don't think he won. I don't watch the show. But I don't think he was I think he was voted off. But yeah, he set the stage 2011. I mean, it's 10 years ago, but it feels longer than that. And that was way pre Cobra Kai. so rough. Macho was just on there. And he's an actor and lots of other things. He's moved on he progressed, but he's always known as the credit kid. And it also doesn't hurt the fact that he has boyish looks.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, it's like the Dick Clark of you know, he's like one of these guys looks like at least 10 years younger than then than he really is. Yeah, maybe
Jason Connell:20. Whoa. So I love that we're going from the dojo to the dance floor. Sounds nice. And Martin Cove. Unbelievable. Talk about looking younger than your age. 75 years old. He will compete in this year's ABCs 30. A season of Dancing with the Stars.
Sal Rodriguez:Oh, nice. Yeah, you know what? This is physical. You know? Recently, we spoke to Janelle Curfman, one of the stunt coordinators from Cobra Kai. And, you know, you kind of alluded to when you're in your conversation with her too. You know, you got to curtail some choreography based on who you're you're teaching, right? I mean, obviously, you're not going to handle Eli the same. You're going to handle Martin Cove. Right. So in these types of situations in particularly a 75 year old, I am very anxious looking forward to see what he's able to do on the dance floor. Yeah.
Jason Connell:Well, and here's the thing, Sal, he's not even the oldest contestant to ever be on Dancing with the Stars. Do you know that? Oh,
Sal Rodriguez:no, I do not. Who was
Jason Connell:the late Cloris Leachman? Wow was 82 when she competed back in 2008?
Sal Rodriguez:Wow. Yeah, of course, from a Young Frankenstein. I remember her primarily.
Jason Connell:She's fantastic was fantastic. Rest in peace,
Sal Rodriguez:rest in peace. So because she was 82 was huge. I gotta hand it to these people. I really do. Because you know what? Just to refresh our listeners. I was a personal trainer for 20 years. I've seen a lot of different people at all stages in life doing their thing. And to see older folk still out there. Yeah, I love it. I admire it and I respect it.
Jason Connell:Yeah, well, you're training a 90 year old now. Right?
Sal Rodriguez:I do meet with a 92 year old twice a week. It's still in Encino, not far from the mural. Mural or not far from Ali's house. Not far from the mural. Yes, I do meet with a 92 year old one of my last remaining personal training clients. And she does a great job. And yeah, I marvel and I admire and it gives me a lot to look forward to.
Jason Connell:Yeah. Do you run a hard boot camp for her really intense?
Sal Rodriguez:You know what, I have her do squats. I have her do planks. I haven't done lunges. I ever do pull downs. She does a really great job. Very proud of me. So hello, Louise. Hello, Luna. Please
Jason Connell:shout out. So you had mentioned Martin coves filmography so we're not gonna get into it play by play. But I will say for those who aren't familiar. His TV credits include Gunsmoke. The Rockford Files, The Incredible Hulk Starsky and Hutch chips, and 125 episodes of Cagney and Lacey, where he played Detective Victor is Becky, plus memorable film roles in Rambo two, and most recently, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And, of course, the Karate Kid where John crease was born.
Sal Rodriguez:Jason I got to see the Incredible Hulk again because you know what, I used to love that show as a kid. And now here I am as a big fan of Cobra Kai. I have to see the episode that Martin CO was on. Do you remember that episode of The Incredible Hulk?
Jason Connell:No, I don't I love the show as a kid, but I didn't know who Martin Cove was at the time. So no, I do recall him from Cagney and Lacey. I watched that show and I used to Yes, hit or miss and my parents are, you know, not like religiously, but I saw enough episodes that he definitely stood out. So when I saw Karate Kid, I made the connection right away.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, same with me. When I first saw the Karate Kid. I did recognize Martin Cove from previous appearances and I would catch it every now and again. So I do believe that yeah, the first time I saw Martin Cove and the Karate Kid. I do remember him from Cagney and Lacey primarily, but that's why I want to see the Incredible Hulk talk about our universe is converging. I mean, I love the Incredible Hulk and I love the Karate Kid. So I want to see those two universes come together.
Jason Connell:Totally. I wonder if he was ever on Spenser For Hire?
Sal Rodriguez:Do you know the Rambo? I'm not surprised. But I got to see that one too. It was a
Jason Connell:mercenary, and that was the okay. There was even a reference to Rambo, of course, when Amanda called him Rambo. And yeah, we didn't make reference of it, of course, and a fan said, I'm surprised you guys missed that. It's like, oh, yeah, we did not reference that reference and our podcast, but yes, he was definitely about to
Sal Rodriguez:wait, wait, Jason, hang on a second. I want to be absolutely clear here. Our author here wrote Rambo two but wasn't it actually Rambo First Blood Part Two.
Jason Connell:Now you're absolutely right, Sal. But people have dropped the first blood, although I gotta say of all of the Rambo's first, blood holds up.
Sal Rodriguez:Well, you know, it's funny, Jason. I remember several years ago, when I was in the acting community, that scene when Troutman approaches Rambo and you know, he's barricaded in that what is like a store something that seems like nothing is over. You asked me I didn't ask you that scene. Every male actor in Hollywood did that monologue as their showcase monologue. I know so many people who did that? Yeah.
Jason Connell:Love it. Alright, so Sal, why don't you share with the audience who Martin Cove will be up against on Dancing with the Stars.
Sal Rodriguez:Well, Martin Cove will be up against bachelor alum, Matt James. Don't, but I don't watch The Bachelor. I'm not the target audience. Let's face it. Spice Girl. Melanie see Mel. Mel. See that's a Scary Spice I believe right?
Jason Connell:I believe so.
Sal Rodriguez:I think that's a scary spice. Beverly Hills. 90210 alum Brian Austin Green. Hello.
Jason Connell:David Silva.
Sal Rodriguez:Oh, yeah. Let's not forget you guys. Together. I remember Brian Austin Green. The ex husband of what's what's what's his wife's name? Who's now dating Machine Gun Kelly.
Jason Connell:Oh, he was married to Megan Fox.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, there we go. Okay. Yeah. So listen, I'm rooting for Cove but if not Cove I'm rooting for Brian Austin Green. Yes, yes. Then we have influencer Olivia Jade I do not know. Now she's the
Jason Connell:one who got into USC under false pretenses pretending she was a rower. And her mother is Lori Loughlin from Full House and her father is the designer Massimo
Sal Rodriguez:Oh, that was just wait a second. That's her. Her parents got to go to prison, but she gets to be on Dancing with the Stars.
Jason Connell:They got out of prison. That's crazy. Pretty sure. But yeah, she is now an influencer and she's no longer a Trojan.
Sal Rodriguez:Okay. All right. All right. So so she's on there. Good luck to her. And Olympic gymnast. Sunni Lee. Yeah, nice. Nice. Okay, USA.
Jason Connell:I think gold has a chance. Yeah, you
Sal Rodriguez:know what I think he does? I think he does. And you know what, especially with the Cobra Kai fans, right? Don't you call into the show to vote is that I
Jason Connell:don't know, I have no idea. But within such a charm. He's got Star Power. He's got so much charisma. And if you learn some moves, and he's learned martial arts, almost his whole career, and a lot more so in the last few years with Cobra Kai, I think that he stands a chance to be in the running to be in the running. I mean, I don't know. I'm sure the show is demanding. And I don't know if it's a popularity contest. But of all these people we just went over. I think he's got the most charm, most star power.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah. And that's a lot of what it takes because it's not necessarily the best dancer. It's not about who's the best dancer. It's not about that necessarily, because you may have a lot going on for you, such as your charisma such as your star power, such as your just overall likability. Yes. Which can put your money way above somebody who might even be a quote unquote, better dancer than you. So I would say on a show like this. It's really anybody's game.
Jason Connell:Yeah. When I saw when I first heard the news, I was just thinking Martin Cove might just be in characters John creasey. entire time, right? Because he's so good at that. And that's a whole other thing. Yes, which would be hysterical. However, I did read in this article COVID hopes that Dancing with the Stars will give him a chance to prove he's more than just his Cobra Kai character. Now, this is where he says, quote, I want to have a good time as Marty COF. It's not a matter of being hard or tough. It's a matter of really showing the population out there that there's another side of this actor other than the popular John crease from Cobra Kai. Well, there you go. We're gonna get 100% Martin Cove and this is a great move for him Sal. His character John crease is more pop rather than ever, with a whole new audience, and now is it gonna be Marty Cove? I really liked this.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, I like that I like hearing him refer to himself as Marty Cove because we've heard other people close to him refer to him as Marty, but I've never heard him referred to himself as Marty. So that's pretty cool. And also Hey, Marty, if I may be so bold you're the only person on the show Dancing with the Stars who has their own action figures so right off the bat I'm on your team actually saw
Jason Connell:the influencer Olivia Jade has their own action.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, next we're gonna see these makers introduce a whole lot of influence or action. We're gonna be seeing
Jason Connell:well, no, wait a second Brian Austin Green now to no never did action figures come on.
Sal Rodriguez:No, unfortunately. And also he was an aspiring rapper at one point. Remember that? You know what, hey, listen off topic, but I think it must be hard for Brian Austin Green to see Megan Fox be with Machine Gun Kelly who's like sort of a rapper. You know, it's like, it's like you wish you were a rapper. Now your ex is dating a guy who's like a very successful entertainer and rapper. So that must be hard. So Brian, believe me, Marty. Number one, Brian Austin Green. Number two.
Jason Connell:You know, if they were really hurting for ratings and Dancing with the Stars probably isn't. They couldn't have Megan Fox on as well as another contestant. Well,
Sal Rodriguez:imagine that if you would have had Brian Austin Green competing against Megan Fox. That would be maybe
Jason Connell:Tori Spelling his 90210. Sweetheart.
Sal Rodriguez:Just put all the rest of the remaining cast on the show. That'd be Yeah.
Jason Connell:So I gotta say good luck to Martin Cove. And Sal by all means, I hope he shows the other contestants.
Sal Rodriguez:No Mercy. Yeah, and you know what, Marty strike first while you're at it
Jason Connell:does strike first. So now we're not gonna see him as crazy. He won't be in a GI he'll probably come out looking like the money. We're gonna have the full Martin cope experience. So so this may be the first season that I tune in.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, this is big. Because you know what? I don't know where I was in 2011 When my show was on how to I don't know what I was doing in 2011. I have no memories. But as your host, what was that in? 2011? Oh, yeah. Okay, there I was. I was at the LA United film festivals run by Jason Connell. That's where I was. But no, I'm very excited about this. Yeah. And you know what, I'm a little bit removed. I have a good friend named Best, who's friends with Tom Berger on the host of Dancing with the Stars. Because they're good friends with Karina. And she was wrapped up in that camp and I was SMPS Carlier rest in peace. And they let me tag along every now and again. So I have met Tom Berger on the host of dance with the stars. Tom Berger. I'm one of the greatest TV hosts probably two I've ever lived and one of those most prolific he wrote a book called I'm hosting as fast as I can. So I did read that when I was back hosting as well. So and here I am still hosting. So here we are. So I'm able to use those gifts that people who have been very successful in an industry can impart upon us such as Tom Bergeron or Marty Cove. So all these people who I admire and love very excited to see this show and yes, I will be sure to tune in this season season number 30.
Jason Connell:Yeah, so a lot of fun. This a different type of episode, we wanted to give a shout out to the beloved Martin Cove who plays one memorable John crease, love them or hate them. You cannot get him out of your mind. No Mercy, John crease. So that's all I got Sal. Anything else?
Sal Rodriguez:Well, you know, you made me think yeah, I do hate why No, I don't hate John Cleese. It's such a strong word. I don't trust him that let's just put it this way. I love Martin Cove. I do not trust for a second John crease
Jason Connell:nor should you. Alright, so before we released Martin Cove is Dancing with the Stars episode from let's talk Cobra Kai. Some news dropped. And that was his first dance was a couple of days after our recording. I thought when we dropped that episode, we had some lead time before Dancing with the Stars went into its 30 a season. But no, he's already Dancehall and we've got information on that. So I was just about to release that episode we just talked about, but we'd be behind if I did so. So we have to talk about Martin coves performance on Dancing with the Stars.
Sal Rodriguez:Well, Jason, I'd be hard pressed to say it was Martin Cove it was actually since a crease his first dance was since a John crease dancing.
Jason Connell:So true Sal and to take a phrase out of your old playbook. The stage was completely cried out.
Sal Rodriguez:It was you know these giant cobras in the back I'm wondering, did the set designers did they buy these? Did they make these? These are humongous giant crush I mean, I wonder if these were remnants of the old Conan the Barbarian. These look like giant cobras in the background.
Jason Connell:I was floored to see this so I quickly ran over you told me you put this on my radar you said hey no look he's already dance. That's what watched it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, just after the fact that I was so excited to see Martin Cove being Marty Cove and his own word, Sal. Yes. Yeah. So he is John crease since a crease, and he comes out in this. What shiny black suit, Sal and he's got words for the crowd.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, he has crowd participation.
Jason Connell:Why don't you tell our listeners what he had to say?
Sal Rodriguez:Martin Cove comes out. And we right away we think this is Chris because there's the Cobras right? Yeah, exactly. And he says to everybody. Weakness doesn't exist in this ballroom does it? And the crowd yells out in unison no sensei walking down the stairs. Yeah, yeah, right. They're like okay, and then he's walking down the stairs. And worry doesn't exist in this ballroom does it? And the crowd no Sensei and they flash to the crowd. We see the crowd getting into the crowd was pretty pumped for this. Oh, yeah. And nerves don't exist in this ballroom. Do they? And the crowd again, no sensei. And then he says, You're all lying. And then boom, the dancing starts.
Jason Connell:Oh, yeah. And he is joined by Britt Stewart as they dance the paso doble paso doble? Yes, yeah, the pasta doble and Sal, what track comes on.
Sal Rodriguez:This was very exciting to hear because I had just done this song on karaoke just recently. Of course, I'm talking about Joe Esposito. Joe bean Esposito is yeah, you're the best around. But this was a cover. This was someone else singing. I got to give him props. I couldn't find who it was. I didn't see a name listed. But this was someone else seen the Joe Esposito song and I think they did a great job, whoever they were.
Jason Connell:Yeah, absolutely. Actually the song is just you're the best but okay, I like that you can have around on there. Yeah, kind of reminded me of the season finale of season three of Cobra Kai on we're at Miyagi dough dojo, and they're playing a great Phil Collins song, not Phil Collins. So great covers go a long way. It's a lot cheaper to get his you know, and sometimes it's nice to have a different rendition that gives a little bit of a different flavor. So yeah, wonderful job. So no, Martin Cove, at least on Episode One of Dancing with the Stars was not himself. He wasn't the Mardi COVID He talked about he was in full crease mode to comment on the dance itself. So I didn't see the other contestants go right. I didn't see anyone else dance. I just watch him. And it was more theatrical than the dance itself. The dance itself was a little flat. I would say your thoughts?
Sal Rodriguez:Well, I should know a little bit more because this goes back into some of my Spanish heritage. The paso doble is a very famous dance been around for a while. You might have seen images of a guy dressed as a matador and kind of a bright fighting attire. Now when I first started watching this, I thought it was flamenco so I confused flamenco, which is also a Spanish dance. I could do a Mandela Effect The oh wait a second, or is flamenco Argentinian? I don't know. But I confuse paso doble with flamenco. So years for years and years. I saw paso doble thought it was flamenco so this is in that realm. The guy doesn't have to move I saw other guys do this dance to the guy doesn't move a lot. Apparently this this dance originated with the military was like a military salute in the beginning. And then it morphed into a national dance, if you will. So it kind of allows the man to not have to move all that much. I'm reminded of Britney Spears today versus Britney Spears 25 years ago. She dances a whole lot more 25 years ago. So Chris, you know, he may have done a better job. 25 years ago, he may have moved a little more fluidly may have been able to bend his knees a little bit better maybe a long time ago, maybe. But this dance doesn't even really require that. Okay,
Jason Connell:well, Brett was doing some nice kicks with her legs or at least leg kicks in general. Not like karate kicks butt. Right may that's why they chose it. But again, it was more theatrical. You know, everything else played into it. But when you got to the dance itself, I could see the judges going, Oh, okay, it's a little more sizzle than steak. But I don't know how they did week one, right? However. So this leads us to what
Sal Rodriguez:their next dance? Right? This This leads into the following week. By the way, folks, this all happened so fast. This is an example of our current era, especially with the Internet. We hear he's going to be on that he's on then he does one performance then he does two performances. And now here we are. So he just did a cha cha tonight. Right? I always thought it was cha cha cha see I need to brush up on my Latin dance. Well, that's
Jason Connell:actually a restaurant in Los Angeles, which was also in the original Fast and Furious cha cha cha. I've been there with him for my birthday a few years ago, by the way, great Cuban food.
Sal Rodriguez:Jason, I'm a very bad Latino. I'm still growing into my Latino heritage, I
Jason Connell:have to say, better late than never. Yeah,
Sal Rodriguez:I am still learning. By the way, what this inspired Jason and I don't know if you did the same. After seeing Colvin Dancing with the Stars. Obviously, I know of the show. I mean, I've never really been a big fan of the show. I catch clips every now and again. Yeah, I said, let me see Machiel from 2011. And I made note of his age, so macho 10 years ago was 49. And this dance he does my god macho, does such a fantastic job. He jumps off the stage, you know, at least three feet off the ground onto the dance floor. And I think in his 49 Macho does such a great job on Dancing with the Stars. I guess he was eliminated at some point. But go back and watch macho from 2011. I was very impressed. And of course, obviously seen images of him and Kumiko on Okinawa at coming to the dance tonight. It was such a MIDI wrong. Oh yeah, it was so great. I mean, watch these clips, you will be taken back to Okinawa.
Jason Connell:All right. I will check it out. Well, so let me just break down the sequence of events for our listeners. We started this whole Martin Cove is on Dancing with the Stars last Thursday, not knowing the show was gonna come out the following Monday. The following Monday, we had this episode slotted to come out in a couple days from now it's already another Monday. And he has already performed a second dance. Now I wasn't going to cover we were going to stick to the theme about it being Cobra Kai. And because Martin Cove made a big deal about being Marty Cove. However, since it happened tonight, there was also some big news. And also the fact that Sal, who was he tonight? Was he since a crease or was he Martin Cove?
Sal Rodriguez:Well, this is another example of why usually we would not go into it that deeply because he is indeed when he does the Cha Cha he is Marty Cove he has not since increased, in fact, it brings to mind should he have lead with crease should he have maybe saved the crease dance for a second dance instead of leading with his first dance as crease. Maybe he should have flipped the script and done it the other way maybe?
Jason Connell:Yeah, that's what people expected. I was expecting him to do the same until he had said what he said in that article that he was going to like just be Martin Cove. So yeah, I'm not sure if it would have mattered but you're right. Maybe he should have led with himself and then kept his alter ego under wraps for an episode. But that said, we took a break. We both just watched the Cha Cha you'd like to call it the Cha Cha Cha, which is fun. Yeah, you know what? I thought it was more energy. I thought it was a better dance. He was doing some John Travolta Pulp Fiction things going on there. I liked it. A lot of flair. She's fantastic, by the way. Oh, yeah. However, you have news that goes beyond just how the dance went?
Sal Rodriguez:Yes, unfortunately, by the word unfortunately, you can all guess where this is going. Jason and I took a break from recording in that five minute break. In that five minute break. I see the headline on People Magazine. Just posted about an hour ago. And I see this and I thought oh boy. Wait till Jason hears this. D WTS. That's the acronym for Dancing with the Stars Dancing with the Stars. Cobra Kai star Martin Cove is the first contestant to be eliminated. Season 30 And then the subtitle. The first star was eliminated from Season 30 of Dancing with the Stars after the second week of the competition now I didn't even know you can get eliminated this fast. Was it the Cha Cha? Was it? The the first one the paso doble. I did read a brief article a day or two ago that some judges did not like the fact that he did the whole Cobra Kai thing that he had the Cobras that he invoked crease and Cobra Kai, they did not like that. I mean, you know, you know how these judges are on these shows that can be very tough. So he got some flack for that. And now here he is doing the Cha Cha. And now here he's gone. So we start this episode, saying that he's gonna be on and we end this episode saying he is now
Jason Connell:off so long. Yeah, the judges showed
Sal Rodriguez:no mercy.
Jason Connell:Nicely done. So now if Martin Cove wanted to flip the script, he'd show up as John crease for one more dance.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, because Cove was eliminated. Yeah, you
Jason Connell:voted off. Yeah,
Sal Rodriguez:I like that. But you know what? One thing I look forward to? Is the possibility there's been no word. This is just my speculation. mochilas been on Dancing with the Stars. Cove has been on dancing. Oh, So I know you're going with this. What's going to happen season 31? Could we see Zabka Zabka on Dancing with the Stars? Well, yeah, it's entirely possible.
Jason Connell:And I bet yeah, he would not be Johnny Lawrence.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, you know what if Cove weren't on and Cove had a done crease, I would say maybe, but it's almost like as we used to say in high school Cove burn the spot. He burned the spot. You could have a tanner Buchanan on a next season. He's not going to do anything Cobra Kai bet you
Jason Connell:right? Did ruff maggio do anything Karate Kid related. We only saw the one dance. He was probably on the show a few.
Sal Rodriguez:I only saw the one dance. It was kind of like a swing type dance. Again. He did a fantastic job. But no, I did not see any reference to karate kid at all.
Jason Connell:I doubt he did because it was 2011. And no one was really talking about Cobra Kai at that point in time. So you know, and he's probably tried to live that down to some degree. Yes. So probably not probably not. Well, folks. That's it. Breaking news. All inside of this one episode. So good for Martin CO for getting on a bigger stage. He did bring attention to the show style. That's for sure. Anybody who wasn't on the inside of Cobra Kai and maybe they're like, Wait, does he look familiar? Where he's gone karate kid here. So if anything that's more eyeballs for the show.
Sal Rodriguez:Yeah, I think it only helps the show. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah.
